I'm wondering about furniture. Do you own any furniture? Would you like to own furniture or would it be an inconvenience to you?  :eyes:

  • Do you only own disposable furniture, or do you have lifetime furniture that you expect to keep with you for many years?
  • Do you prioritize furniture that is your own? Or do you prefer to simply use whatever is built-in or provided with your house/rental?
  • And overall, how do you feel about furnitures impact on your life, sense of self and overall place in the world?

For the sake of this thread, I'm defining furniture as large objects that sit in a house, such as tables, beds, wardrobes, floor lamps etc.  :dog:

For myself, I have owned a range of cheap Ikea furniture in the past, but I currently only one one office chair that I got second hand, and a large rug if you count a rug as furniture - the chair is semi-disposable to me, but the rug is something I can imagine keeping for my whole life. I suppose I do own one or two heirloom furnitures that are technically earmarked for me, but live at other family members houses because I have nowhere to put them, I suppose that counts too, but it feels more abstract!

I think I find it quite frustrating that I'm in a space that cant accommodate having my own things in it; and I do think being able to construct your own space is important, but I can also see how it could become overwhelming too and maybe I should appreciate the weightlessness :dunno:

Also as a follow up question, does your furniture show up in your web crafting? For example the lamp on the giphy gallery is actually the lamp over my kitchen table

I have acquired lots of furniture in my room over the years and I love near all of them! all of it was either bought second-hand, traded, DIY'ed, or found on the side of the road. all except for one, my beds head-board. which was bought new... almost two decades ago (and i plan on repainting it in the summer since it sort of sticks out)

Im aware Im lucky to stay on one place for a while so I try to buy furniture with the intention of keeping it for a long long time, even smaller pieces like storage bins, organizers, or trinkets, so i make myself think of the longevity of the furniture or how easy it would be to break/fix. I love how much character it all has and how my space feels very "me" and it makes me happy to be in my room.

But... it does make me feel very hesitant to move out or leave. I am sometimes envious of people with no ties. I would be saddened to leave so much behind. that being said it wouldn't be impossible to take a lot with me. a lot of my furniture is light weight, able to be taken apart and rebuilt, or just actually is a 1940s traveling trunk meant for going the distance.

tldr: i <3 my used old furniture

Since I currently live in someone else's house, I will define furniture I own as stuff I've either bought myself, was explicitly gifted, or moved here with, since otherwise I have no idea if it's mine or if I'm just borrowing it before I eventually move again.

I have a letter writing desk/shelf that I've got my laptop setup at, the poor thing was "restored" via a thick coat of white paint before I got it. I'd love to figure out how to clean it off at some point

There's a cheap bookshelf that I was convinced by my partner to let him ask her mother about buying as a birthday gift for us (they're about a month apart) so I wouldn't need to spend my rather limited money on it. I plan on eventually buying another bookshelf to replace the other small one in our room, since it's many years old and rather wobbly.

I own a mattress but I currently don't sleep on it. There's a bunk that it's on and its been sorta converted into a plushie storage space. That moved with me.

And I bought my partner a desk shelf that will absolutely move with us when we can eventually get on our feet.

Due to our situation, my partner and I would probably go with whatever is provided. Though eventually having everything be our own would be nice, even if it's mainly gifted stuff or thrifted things.

i have a lot of ikea furniture. it's cheap and convenient, but i would love to instead rework them and old, battered furniture into something more glamorous; upcycling is really inspiring to me, i just need to find the time! i think that it would make my place feel more lived-in, in a sense. out-of-box furniture is nice, but when it all looks the same, the senses are not excited!

i have also been meaning to look into cliff tan's work as an interior designer who incorporates some aspects of feng shui; his particular approach really appeals, and i think that the layout of a space truly can influence your life. though i am not a believer in its spiritual merits necessarily, i think we do carry anxiety when our bed is near a window or our back is to the open door. i am criminally poor at placing furniture, and my room makes me irritable at times.

I... don't know.... I think technically my parents own most of my furniture......
I do love to try to make it my own, though. One of my long term projects has been painting a mural on the back of my bookshelf.... I plan to keep most of my furniture around for as long as it's necessary for my life! My bedroom furniture includes a bed....
owned for who knows how long, painted at some point late in elementary school so its teal :D my bookshelf is also the same way....
i have a dresser that has been owned for a long time, and i believe painted twice now? right now its black and pink (and the top drawer has stripes on it, but i got too lazy to do the rest TwT)
i have a small trinket shelf. also teal. can you start to get a feel for the theme elementary wolfkitty42 was going for....
i have a rolling rack for my dresses and cosplay stuff. super helpful investment!!! i dont have a closet so i think it's honestly fantastic..... my wigs and accessories are kept in two storage cubes, which have been very helpful and very colorful (at least one of them has, i only managed to cover one in stickers...)
speaking of stickers- im not sure trash and recycling cans count as furniture, but i have adorned my... teal and light teal cans with plenty of stickers!! they match!
i also have a hanging mirror i got when my bro decided they didnt want to use it anymore!
my most recent furniture acquisition was a large college style desk. i was using an old school desk previously and i really just didn't have enough space for it or on it.... i am keeping around the chair from it though, because its comfy and im used to it. :) i really enjoy that this desk has a bulletin built into it, and it has three drawers and a shelf on top! its a BIG space upgrade! i have room for shr3k3 and my cds, random work bullshit, random art crap, a decorative faygo can.... AND A PLACE TO STORE MY LIBRARY BOOKS WHILE IM READING THEM!!!! squee!!!!! i was really, really excited to get it, and i look forward to learning how to repair it when it breaks!!! best desk!!!

oh my gosh for sure! i used to live in a room with an impossible layout- there were two cutouts in a square room for the closet and chimney, and my bed was large enough that it really only fit in terrible spots... including, with the head at the closet???? that was extremely helpful for my night terrors! haha... h.... haha.... ;w;
while i havent researched fung shui, a lot of my goal with my current bedroom arrangement was to create dedicated spaces- my closet hanger thingy (not sure what itd be called) makes a dressing corner with my dresser, and my bookshelf and desk work to make the space inbetween that into a sleep zone.... and then, of course. i have a bed. what else am i supposed to do in my, bed room.... XD
its been really cosy and nice to have this layout because it makes me feel like the room is simultaneously larger and smaller... it feels smaller because there's less open space, but much larger because i have made the spaces divided and much more interesting on their own!

I live alone in a very tiny flat that came unfurnished, so basically everything is mine. It's a small place so I don't have much. I eat at my desk as I haven't room for a dining table, and I've developed a habit of avoiding needing to eat with a knife and fork because the desk was a recent acquisition and I've been here many years now. I have my complaints, but I don't mind living small in and of itself. It's cheap and a lot easier to manage with my disabilities.

Most of the furniture is second-hand, inherited, or cheap crap from The Warehouse, but I do have a quality bed that I bought new maybe a year ago or less. I also have a decent office chair and armchair that I bought new, but I use the armchair as a desk chair because I start going numb if I use the office chair for too long. :/

Oh also I have a single crappy wooden dining chair that I use as a bed-side table.

Most of the furniture I own is stuff my Mum bought or gave to me or stuff I was pressured into impulse buying because I didn't feel like I was allowed to take the time I needed to make a good decision for myself. I think that's part of why I've never felt a sense of ownership over my space.

I actually do tend to be very sentimental towards objects, and I have many possessions that I'm emotionally attached to and want to keep for personal reasons, but as far as pieces of furniture go the only thing I have like that is a metal wall hanging of a school of fish. Everything else is just functional, replaceable furniture. There's a shelf that almost could've been special to me, but that attachment got ruined by outside interference.
