How do you use the neocities/nekoweb follow feature?

So I've kinda wondered about this for a while and im wondering what ya'lls opinions are

So on neocities (and nekoweb but mostly on neocities, since its more of a feature there) there is following, and im kinda wondering what people sorta consider that and do with that

like for me, if someone follows me on neocities, I usually link them on my site, but not everyone does that from what ive seen, so like what does being followed/following a site mean to you? like is it the equivalent of saying "hey, your site is cool and i linked you. wanna link me back?" or is it more like "your site is cool and i wanna follow your updates"

Im not really asking this in terms of etiquette per say since i think its something that can vary from person to person, im more just wondering what your opinion is on it

I follow sites I want to come back to and view, instead of bookmarking them. Also, I follow sites to see their updates. I treat it like you would follow someone on SNS, but mostly, I do it to come back to websites I want to remember.

Usually I follow them back and link them to my site. Not all of the time, and I never expect the same from others, but I just lurk and like their site updates on Neocities or follow their RSS feeds if I'm a real big fan of it...
I don't think there's an etiquette on Neocities regarding the 'follow' feature though; dunno about Nekoweb. It's surely appreciated, but I doubt people on those sites care all that much about reciprocating. Maybe that's just me?

I personally follow cool sites that inspire me or that just have really nice content.
Other than that, I do think some of those features are very social media-esque, especially the activity feed, and the people in there still give me that social network vibe ...
Is it a good thing? Much to ponder...
