What's the point of guild regions

They just exist. It doesn't seem to affect anything.
Most of the guilds just pick Melon Town.

Is or was there a feature that uses guild regions or is it just to categorize/group guilds together.

Regions are a preemptive feature for the eventual addition of the ML World

(Which will be an explore-able world for navigating the site). Right now they are fully included in the API, so you can code everyone pages and custom thingy's based on them!
