Okay, so, I'm not entirely sure if this is the right place to discuss it, but I guess it's worth a shot.

For the people who have dedicated animated GIF graphics for their personal site, such as a 88x31 badge, or a navlink or other similar indie web ad things like sidelinks or johnvertisements, or other dedicated GIFs for ur site, how do you go about it?

My initial idea was to make the GIFs into a video initially, using a video editing software like Davinci Resolve, and then exporting that into a GIF, but I've a nagging feeling that maybe there's another piece of software that was more focused on making gifs, not video.

Maybe I'm overthinking things. I know like with all things art, there's no right answer, and no right way to go about this, but I'm oddly curious on how others go about making their GIFs.

Any responses would be appreciated!!!

ezgif is really good for both making gifs and editing existing ones !  and if you don't mind not having transparency (last i checked anyway. it could be different now i haven't made a gif in a while), i can offer firealpaca in terms of actually offline software

I was thinking of something like this

https://makoenergy.neocities.org/images/navlinkmako.gif
https://kidzombie.online/img/kidzombie-navlink.gif
https://i.imgur.com/GIwHpue.gif
https://rgnd.neocities.org/assets/rgndxzzk-short.gif

something with like, a lot more animation and shit
that's why i initially thought of making a vid that would later be converted to a vid cuz i feel like using a video editing software or motion graphic software would be a good enough way to go about this

i'm not against the suggestion, but i feel like ezgif would be a little too limiting for what i'm trying to go for.

I wouldn't really say I recommend this technique, but I personally just use GIMP where each frame of the animated GIF is a layer on the image. It works, but GIMP is also a terrible image editor and there are certainly better tools. It looks like the GIFs you want to make have a lot of frames that would become quite painful in image editing software, so I like your idea of using video editing software and converting the video to a GIF after the fact.

Using Photoshop would be nice but i've already switched to Affinity not too long ago and honestly i can't be fucked to pirate photoshop again through GenP
i don't even know why i'm making it out like it's way harder than it should be. i'm just lazy as hell, i guess, lmao

Gifcam can record gifs from a video. is that what you're wanting to do?

GIMP has the ability to create animated gifs. The basic idea is explained here, this can easily be extended :). I attach two GIFs I made this way.

I'm really weird but I use Photoshop for all of my gifs, animations, etc. Especially for Y2K themed banners and what not. I know there's better programs and I own a few but I've been using Photoshop since CS2 and it's just the thing I know my way around the most.
