Granular synthesis

Granular synthesis is a really interesting concept to me, but I've never actually tried writing melodies with it. I've heard it can help with some unique ideas though. For those of you who use granular synths, do you use them, and what do you typically use them for? Are they mainly texture/sound-design tools for you, or do you actually compose melodies and full parts with them?

I no longer have access to any of the files, but I used granular synthesis in a few projects back in college. The first few tries I used it more as background ambience but I eventually found a way to use it as a melody synth. It requires a lot of tinkering, but it's absolutely usable in both cases. I haven't really tried since I graduated though. There haven't really been times where I thought that it was needed.
