hello everyone!
i really dislike pinterest. in theory, it's a great way to group together ideas. but it has its limitations; you can't freely shuffle things around and create true collages, you can't "draw on" the board and annotate as you wish. the discoverability of new pins is nice, but now it's filled with genAI - and it has always been a nightmare for artists, as their work is constantly reposted without credit.
for that, i much prefer milanote, which is an online corkboard/collage creator that suits me
very well! it's amazing for organizing art inspiration and references for various projects. there's no way to search for things to add, but that's not really a problem for me and i think this actually helps the art reposting issue even if only a little. i can't put something up on my profile without a link back and let other people assume it's mine.
here's my problem: milanote only works when i have internet connection and if it ever goes down, it's gone forever, unless i exported the boards i own as images. so i'm on the hunt for something that allows me to:
- paste in images
- move those images around freely
- annotate with text, free drawing, and line tools
and is an entirely offline application! i've tried, like, libreoffice draw and it is way too clunky for what i'd like to do, and i'm limited by a specific canvas resolution, as they sort of intend for you to print your work. i have no intention of doing so

it should also be noted that i'm on linux - but if there are others on other operating systems who are looking for the same thing, i'd love for people to still share their finds!
