Today is a very sad day today. Patrick Stewart has passed away.
I never met Patrick Stewart, but he had a profound effect on my life and also my mothers life.
My mother lost her dad at the age of 10 years old. This was soemthing that would haunt her for the rest of her life. Her dad and her would watch Star Trek: The Next Generation together whenever they could. It was airing new at the time and they would catch every episode. Once he died, she watched every single episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation and every series that came out before and after in honor of her dad.
Jean Luc Picard, who was played by Patrick Stewart, became a role model and her favorite character. He played an intelligent, no nonsense character, yet also had such a deep kindness for everyone and everything. The perfect role model for a little girl who just lost her father.
She and I would watch Star Trek together, even though she loved Patrick Stewart her favorite series was always Deep Space 9, we watched every single episode. She wanted me to watch it from a young age not only because she loved it but also because she knew that it taught lessons about the human condition that were important to know and learn about. Ones that I have taken to heart as an adult.
My mother passed away 6 months ago, June 4th, 2026. At her funeral was an autographed picture of Patrick Stewart, one of her most prized possessions.
Losing Patrick Stewart is, in a way, like losing a part of my mother.
From the outside this might seem silly, but it is true.
He impacted my life in a very important way and I hope that, whatever happens after we die, he gets the best version of it.
