Forum feature requests and Ideas

I love most of these ideas! Especially the Scratch one. That makes me feel nostalgic for when I first used it when I first started programming in the late 2000s!

It could be encourage others here to learn, too!

We should also to have these little alert banners in melonland too. Alerts are an extension of Markdown used to emphasize critical information.

I think they are a nice addition, don't you think?

Forum Toolbar thingy

Most of these are really cool ideas; they all involve quite a lot of programing! For annoying license reasons I cant share the exact code the forum uses; but I can say that we use a variant of SCEditor ~ if you wanted to try and implement some of these features in a local SCEdtor (JavaScript) and then send me the code it would make it waaaay less work for me to add them in.

2. Main Page and Forums

These are really cool too; most of them need to be done in PHP and again it would speed things up a lot if you could figure out how to implement them on a generic SMF Forum and then send the code! ~ I really like the countdown ideas.

I actually don't know how to easily add profile options; it seems to be quite a complex process, but it would be useful to figure that out!

nice if it displayed if there were unread messages in the section so you can click through all the unread messages easier

I'm not sure if that number is easily accessible in code; but I can look into it!

I can handle browsing this site fine and dandy on my laptop and iPad, but browsing it on my iPhone is really painful to do. I think giving this site a mobile-friendly layout would be great, and would hopefully not hurt the overall aesthetic of the site + any of the themes (I'm using the default skin, idk how well the others run on mobile).

it technically does already, if you scroll down to the bottom theres a WAP2 button that redirects to a heavily stripped down version. it does have some pretty big missing features tho, mostly you cant quote messages or access the shoutbox at all

Hmm I probably missed that. However, I'm not a huge fan of how it looks. It feels really bland compared to how it looks on desktop, but maybe that's just me. Also, it's very easy to miss, which isn't helping it.

What I'm visioning is something like it, but with more features and still retaining the aesthetic and vibe of the site.

can you please remove disabling the post button when you have too short of a message? i understand that usually you want to have more thought out stuff but it can be annoying to be outright blocked from being able to, like i had to pad a message in the art request board which was annoying and im having to pad this message right now to get it to send

Weather

On the top of the webpage, lets say, here, there should be a little thing on top of here showing the current weather.



But wait! There is a plot twist!!

That's right, there are MORE temperatures then ever!!

It's more then just Celsius and Fahrenheit!!



Season Themes!
But wait there is more! The forums theme (layout should be the same) should change depending on what season it is.

For example, Christmas. The forum starts snowing instead of raining, the icons become festive (for example the profile button becomes santa), the melonland forums logo color becomes red and green, the flood becomes snow, etc etc etc

You can enable these themes forever in the Options. Or you can disable festive themes.

NOTE: If you are already using a non-festive theme, nothing will change by default.

HexClock and RGBeat Theme
These two special clocks (should you pick one) will change the forums interface color depending on what time it is. Really fun to watch!!

We should have a Class Pet- a digital pet that we can all interact with and care for. Their status would sync between all users, like the old water overlay. I realize this would be very difficult to code but I think it would be funny

feature requests: the ability to mute individual threads as well as categories, and for muting users to do something - at the moment it does not seem to do anything besides control who can direct message you.

This one has been on and off the cards for a while simply because its not a feature that Iv been able to find a plugin for and its quite complex to custom make it ~ I'm still trying to figure out a fair solutions.

muting users to do something

We don't actually have a block or mute system ~ we have an "Ignore private messages from this person" system (that's actually what the list is called in the code). Again its a case of ~ blocking is not a feature that seems to exist for this forum software, so we kinda have to invent it from scratch - I think this one would be a little easier to do though, since the code to add and remove people from your ignore list already exists and is working - we just need to tie that code into the post lists, to maybe hide or spoiler posts by ignored people?

I'm also kinda aware that a lot of people use the "Recent Posts" list a bit like a social media feed, but since it wasn't designed to be a feed like that, we don't really have the infrastructure to tailor it to peoples wishes the way a feed normally would be.

There's a few solutions to that and I think we can gradually work to improve it over time, but suggestions are helpful as it wont be an instant fix.

Slightly off-topic, but something I noticed about this forum is that there's no way to tell if you've already read a thread on the homepage. On another forum I frequent, visited threads have their links turn a different colour, and when new replies appear a little star icon shows up next to the thread name. I think this would make normal thread-browsing more convenient, whereas as of right now, using the recent posts list is the most convenient way to see what's new on the forum.

If I'm not mistaken on board pages, threads that are unread have the word "New" at the end of their title?
While on the homepage, boards that have newly posted topics since you last looked have an illuminated city (or star on the blue theme).
