old ipod is good especially if ur going for retro nostalgia vibe but I'm pretty sure the old ones got old batteries that are kinda shitty now. i got a hifi walker h2 this thing is a dream. also open source OS so you can put custom UI on it from rockbox. the one i have is rly minimalist and i love it :D. i think they have options on the site for stuff that looks like windows xp and stuff so u can still get that retro feel. great buttons too. its a bit pricey ($80) and you can get something that works for like 20 on amazon or ebay but this thing is a dream. i'm like horrifiedd of dropping it tho

I've got an iPod 5th gen Classic. I've never actually stopped using iPods, because I've used them religiously throughout my childhood lol (just different models). I got my current one back in 2022.

I have a Sony Walkman NW-S544. It's been passed down to me by my mother and It's been smooth sailing. I love the process it takes to get new music on it. Though, I do procrastinate when I want to put new music on it haha. It's pretty simple to work and straightforward. There's no application required in order to move the music to the MP3, just somewhere to plug it into and transfer from that other device. It's not the most "aesthetic" option but I'm only using it because Spotify sucks and I want to be able to listen to my music anywhere without issue.

I loved my mp3 players back in the day.  And classic iPods.  So tactile, and filling them up was a fun activity.  I tried to bring an old iPod back into my life but it just made things harder, since I do have my smartphone everywhere with me anyway.

Same story with my old GameBoy colour, really.  I was excited to bring it back to life, and I'm glad I did.  But Carrying it around and using it was a relative nightmare compared to running an emulator on my phone.

BTW has anyone else tried PokeMMO?  I'm liking it alot!  :D

My MP3 / Music collection system is actually an old iPhone 11 connected to a lighting dock speaker/alarm with only the music app and this accesibility mode called "guided use" or something like this (in catalan it is called ús guiat). As for my phone, i use and old LG android flip phone which is only compatible with whatsapp and i use the integrated music player. The way i get new songs is either by: buying and ripping new cds or friend's cds. If I cannot find an album or a song, i'll try with the iTunes (Only if I really like the song / album) and if there is no other option I use Soulseek to download music in FLAC. My music library is just integrated in my iTunes library and I sync it with all my devices. Pretty straightforward.

Go visit the Rockbox webpage, it is a FOSS custom firmware for multiple MP3 players (included some iPod models) There is a great community and the developers are always adding stuff. Also the themes are pretty cute!!!  :skull: Take a look at this page and search for compatible devices, if you find any with good compatibility then use it as a reference for getting an MP3 player.

So it seems I'm not alone in my love and ownership of the 5th Gen iPod. I got mine from my little brother who actually had two when I showed interest. I run it with rockbox software to get all the benefits of non-stock OS. It still runs with its original 30GB hard drive. It is on the agenda to upgrade to an iFlash duo to allow for multiple microSD cards for all my hifi music to fit. When that is obtained Ill likely get a bigger battery though mine is in good shape and only a couple years old. runs for hours without fail!

Note: Song Playing In the Image Is Untouchable by Golemm and is up there as one of my favorite songs!

yes. iRiver T60. it's stupid.

old enough to get a driver's license. literally bought for my grandmother. has typos in UI strings. internal memory (a generous, uhh, 1GB) only accessible through a USB-B Mini port (yes, really). does not understand USB hubs, or most USB ports for that matter (plug it into a backplate port if you want a shot; probably wants legacy USB support?). mounts as a fat16 filesystem. confuses the shit out of FUSE (becomes impossible to umount --force). contains a shitty old RSS podcast downloader compiled probably for windows XP? i am not sure as i could not WINE it. the podcast downloader is accompanied by an extremely funny looking manual too.

runs on AAA batteries and doesn't give me ads. so, still better than spotify

These custom OS:s you guys are using look so cool! For some reason it hasn't crossed my mind that I can do that :P I might just give it a go. My current screen-less MP3 players have not the greatest battery situation, so if I do try a new fancy schmancy screened one :ok: I'll try a custom OS!

I just use AIMP on my android phone to play back local audio files, but I made sure to not use social media on it. I even got rid of youtube on it, instead using vlc. So basically it's a local media player that happens to make phone calls and connect to the internet only if needed.

I've been getting by with an iPod nano 7th gen that I got for christmas a dozen and one years ago. It may not be the most pleasing to look at, but it has bluetooth and a decent enough storage size (16gb) that I can put on over half of my library without much hassle.

That does mean that I'm missing a bunch of music, yes, but that's sort of fun! I like having to be intentional about what music I'm able to carry around with me. Every couple weeks I plug it in and switch out an artist or album for another. It's fun to see what stays on and what gets moved around - I've downloaded entire discographies only to remove them a month later because my taste has moved on.

Previously I had a modded iPod classic 5th gen. That thing was a BEAST, I replaced the storage on it with a flash adapter and I was able to carry my entire collection in FLAC, it was nuts. I gave it to my dear friend/coworker when he moved back to his hometown. He said that he listened to the entire thing on the drive back, which was over three days, so it's had a good life!

Since iPod prices are kinda crazy these days, I'd like to add the suggestion that an iPhone 4 or 4S makes for a great iPod! They sound really good, the battery is easy to replace, you can prob get one for free from a family member, and while they are technically phones, the phone bit no longer works, they have no working chat apps or social apps, and the browser does not work, so they are basically iPods

My advice would be to follow these steps:
 • Find one cheap or free from a family member, ideally 16 or 32GB, but 8 is doable - make sure they remove it from their account
 • Downgrade it to iOS 6, this both looks cooler and will make it run a lot faster
 • If the battery is dead get a new one from iFixit for about 15 euro - these just need two screws, there's no glue!
 • At this point you can just copy music to it with iTunes and your done! However if you install Universal Media Server on your computer, you can also stream your music and movies to it and watch them in VLC
 • To install VLC and/or Foobar 2000 - You'll need to fix the app store first, there's a few steps but it's not too hard - you can also sideload these apps since downgrading will jailbreak the phone too!
 • You can install Tunein Radio for internet radio. eMail, Calendars and Notes still work if you set them up, plus you can take pictures!
