I run it with rockbox software to get all the benefits of non-stock OS. It still runs with its original 30GB hard drive.
i had heard of rockbox, but i never checked out the site until now. their flashing program is really hype, it honestly makes me wish i had an ipod just to try it. i have an ipod mini 2nd gen, but its hdd is broken or something, it boots to a deadpod icon and the apple support-for-ipod link, which is dead :-( i use my iphone for my portable music needs, it runs the foobar2000 app. i want to get the experimental build of rockbox for 3ds, since i want to shift away from my phone. i only want to use it for the cellular hotspot. my 3ds can check the weather, google maps, discord, a lot of modern non-JS sites, and it has Pomegranite for music but i barely use it as a player and i havent updated/synced its library in a while. im gonna try out that rockbox build and see if i like it. rockbox has a lot of those little bits that divide mp3 players from, like, ipod levels of playing. i dunno. i mean like e.g. album grid for selection, disc seperation/grouping (for multi-disc albums), dynamically-updated playlists (like genre or whatever), fancy types of sorting (track length, 72nd letter of album name or something), etc... and while i dont NEEEEEEEED all the fancy parts im more inclined to use a thing as a player if it has more capability (for example 3DS' Pomegranite doesnt let you make playlists or queue up any music, and the 3DS Sound app lets you make playlists but not queue up music...), and i dunno the rockbox situation but it seems pretty complete as far as i know. i think if i were to want any one specific feature i'd want a player that comes with bits for library syncing, my dream would be a 3ds app that lets you use RSYNC/SCP to sync your library, but alas all i have is FTP. blablabla i like music ok
