Do yo Role Play?

I've been a Table Top Role Player for 30ish years, and as much as I love being around the table with all that awesome spontaneous energy, I actually prefer forum role playing, otherwise known as PbP (Play by Post).  I really like how I can have a recorded history of everything that happens in the game, and that I'm never really put on the spot.  I can take my time, and I don't have to pre-arrange a coordinated time to show up... just whenever is convenient.

Anyway, do you enjoy written forms of role playing?

oh my gosh, i LOVED pbp roleplaying as a kid!!! it was pretty much my only hobby for a while. partially because of the advantages you mentioned--being asynchronous meant i could post a reply at night and then not have to share another until after school.

all the sites i once used have since gone offline. where do you find pbp now, if you don't mind my asking? :0

I've been doing PbP and TTRPG roleplaying for a fair while now, closing on around 20 years for tabletop and around 10 for PbP. Though my forum based RPing is definitely slowing down a ton, I've been trying to find good places to try it out but I just found none unfortunately... I've also been dabbling in solo TTRPGs, specifically Cyberpunk.

You may ask, how is it different from just writing? Well, it's a mix of that and playing the game. You have a table with a lot of random events you can roll to get a fairly general image of what happens, and you string it together with your own plot and make up something fun while engaging with the mechanics and kinda dealing with what happens. It's very fun, but I lack motivation to do long-form stuff with it unfortunately. :(

I was going to write: "How do you actually play it, is that not super slow?"  But then I recalled I play correspondence chess, and find it generally more enjoyable than regular games!

Recently I discovered "solo rpgs".  It is an interesting mixture of normal RPGing and "oracles" (tables, dice, and similar to know what you are going to do next).  I was not interested at first but then tried it during a long ride on a train and it really works.

I actually met my husband through PBP roleplay! And, not only do we still do it to this day, but it's also how I ended up on my current path to becoming an author! Needless to say, PBP roleplay has a very special place in my heart.

I'd love to do it more frequently with others, but I haven't been on the online scene for a while. The last forum I was really into shut down :(

i LOVE roleplaying!! i grew up minecraft rping, so PBP has been a semi-constant thing in my life. tbh, i have been wanting to get more into traditional ttrpgs with an in-person group, since i feel like my real-life improv and rp skills have diminished. but!! my partner recently made her very first character, and i have been thinking of DMing for friends for a while, so who knows!! maybe i'll get to do it soon :D

I can recommend checking out RPG-Directory: it's a forum where you can browse ads for various roleplaying forums people have posted, as well as post up what you're looking for in a game, so that people might flock to the post to pitch theirs, or make tailored suggestions. A lot of the play-by-post stuff is rocking over on JCInk forums these days. I met my childhood best friend through PBP roleplay, so it's got a soft place in my heart.

If you're interested in a particular recommendation: personally, I'm biased towards the Super Fade. I've been having fun with the supernaturals in Chicago scene, and it's nice to write with other adults. A recent RPG-D poll concluded, and a bunch of the top tier forums are represented in the ranking, so that's also worth looking into to see if anything catches your fancy.

Wh... A forum for browsing whole other forums? And there are so many?? People just... straight up make new forums for various roleplays whenever??? This is a whole new side to the hobby that I didn't even know existed until now what the heck-

i really like roleplaying in theory but in practice things tend to go wrong u_u im not very good at understanding what the other players expect from me in return it seems but i would like to get better at that...
i also have this weird issue where i have difficulty roleplaying mean characters as being Mean. i think its because in my head thats Me being rude to the other persons character and the idea of that makes me subconsciously sad?

I relate to both of these things. What helped me with the first one was just to have a lot of OOC discussion about how we want events to play out. These days, when I write with my husband, we often come up with an outline of the entire story before we even start writing. It's certainly easier with 1x1 roleplays, but it's definitely doable with groups too, provided you've found cool people to write with.

As for the second thing, I don't have any particular advice, I just feel that really hard x'D
There are a few particular stories I've written where I have to play an outright jerk, and it just makes me so sad for the other character. It does get easier overtime, and, again, lots of OOC communication helps, but realistically, if you don't like playing characters like that, you don't gotta

may i also recommend pixel perfect? it's a pretty similar deal to rpg directory, but it also hosts lots of really nice resources if you'd ever want to make your own. i've used it plenty, highly recommend it.

anyway, i ALSO LOVE ROLEPLAYING!! most of my time roleplaying has been spent doing discord roleplays, but i've lately been getting into forum rps too. I've actually been working on a character for a forum for the past few days, i'm suuuper excited!!

i used to roleplay when i was younger, especially on roblox and discord with my sister and friends 
i dont rlly rp now as im not rlly interested in it anymore and im rlly shy    i still do tho, just like once in a while

During the height of the pandemic, I got absolutely HOOKED with a GTA San Andreas roleplay server called "Proyecto Mila"

I would spend whole nights working as a truck driver, getting in trouble with whatever Mafia I was part of, and trying my hardest to get enough money to buy weapons on the black market (Which was a physical place you could go to, with real people selling and buying all kinds of things)

I remember the parties made on that server fondly too! 

Someone would make an advertisement on the dedicated ad channel and up to 100 persons would show up to the parties, which ALWAYS, without fault, ended in mass shootouts between gangs

I had my own little posse too!, we used to sell guns, drugs and we also loved to steal from civilians


Finding this thread has made me want to roleplay once again after so many years of not doing so

Little bit.
I've been interested in roleplays since I was a young kid, but I've always been the shy type, so I never really took part in the ones I saw online or in video games...
There's also TTRPGs! I was really into D&D and Warhammer when I was in my early teens, but my school's D&D/TTRPG Club was weird as hell, everyone talked to much to progress every game we tried playing, and I still don't know how to find a group elsewhere!

I've been thinking about finding people to roleplay with again pretty recently but I'm unsure where to begin. Not the biggest issue in the world, but I can't help but wonder what it's like. Oh well...

omg i loved roleplaying on forums back in the day!! ezboard anyone?? xD I never knew it was called PbP, we just called it roleplaying or like, forum RP or something. I spent ALL my teen years roleplaying so much! Honestly I've stilled RPed with some close irl friends on forums like maybe 3-4 years ago lool.
