Indie TTRPGs are a blast! They were my first introduction into the hobby, and remain near and dear to my heart. I’ve written one in the past that’s been included in a couple of Trans Rights TTRPG fundraising bundles under a different pen name, and it certainly gave me a better appreciation for how difficult it is to do so. It’s sort of like all of the difficult parts of DM/GM-ing, but without the live feedback of your players to riff off of!

Butterfly Court is absolutely fantastic- it’s one of the top three games that I’ll recommend to anyone looking to jump into the hobby, and the setup makes it extremely well suited to teaching newcomers who have never played a game before: something I’ve done twice in the last few groups I’ve been a part of/run the game for. The character archetypes are all so inventive, the build is fairly quick, and I really love the balance between small scale stakes between characters, and larger scale events with the world at large within the game.

Exactly like that! I do my writing over on Discord primarily, so we just set up an OOC channel/thread to hold that sort of communication and side commentary. I encourage people to keep their copy of the game book open in another tab so that they can reference it as we write, synchronously or otherwise. Most of the time, longer term campaigns basically devolve into freeform roleplay entirely anyway (with perhaps a loose tie in to any plot scenarios the game book provides, though I like to riff off of what else might fit into the scenario- like exploring underground lake cave systems in Tangled Blessings), since I mostly play for the writing- character development and their interactions are my favourite part of any game.

I haven’t actually written PBP TTRPGs on a forum prior, though I imagine it could be similarly handled by having the first post serve as an information hub and be pinned to the top, a bit like how some Dreamwidth roleplay communities handle arranging their rules and plot summaries and such.

I also struggle running new systems, which is why I like l
ighter systems; PbtA games in particular are less intimidating a lot of the time due to the similarities. Once you've played Monster of the Week, a lot of the games that come after feel familiar.
I have both played and ran Masks, but I really need to branch out to more PbtA games.
Is the Magnus rpg good? I don't own it but I've been intrigued by it. I've been a fan of the podcast for years and like the idea of using that lore in a game, but I was curious what the mechanics look like. All of the art I've seen from it is really cool, but I've never heard anything about how it plays.[/font]
This is weird because I feel kind of unqualified to answer this question. I personally have been struggling with it but im not sure if that's because I don't know the rules well, or if it just doesn't work for my DM style or what. It is a role play heavy game and that sounds like your kind of thing.

I don't really know how to explain game play but there is a primer here.
TMA DriveThur RPG primer

Oh and here's an explanation of the system it uses that's pretty good and I wish I had found when I had started running it.

Cypher System reference sheet

I do want to say running a game in The TMA setting is so fun. I am not normally a person that makes fan OCs but now I have a ton of TMA OCs I really like. The book also has a lot of stuff about changing and twisting the lore from the show which is super fun. My version of the Church of the Lightless Flame is pretty much just fight club from Fight Club and, I am unreasonably proud of it.

Man, where do I start? My first experience was Pathfinder 1st Edition way back in like around 2009-2011. Got a few stories on that and the couple of campaigns that came from it. After some more minor games, we eventually hit Shadowrun 3rd edition. That one was a blast too. Next big one was Dungeon Crawl Classics followed by my friend's own personal edition of it. Hell, I was one of the co-author of my own for the last MechJam called Cydonia: Battlefield of the Lost! Right now it looks like anime/BESM d20 will be dominate in the group. Outside of the group, in others, it has been Final Fantasy d20 or more Pathfinder 1st. In PBP games, almost always PF1e or Dungeons and Dragons 3.5e simply because I'm very attracted to the character creation minigame.

Something mentioned in the original post is the possibility of hosting a game with fellow forum members: this is something I'd be really excited about! I'd be happy to provide a copy of the gamebooks that I prefer to use to group members (Tangled Blessings, and Butterfly Court, both of which are indie gamebooks: which are built on the Anamnesis engine and the No Dice No Masters system (based on the Belonging Outside Belonging group of games.)

I love writing play-by-post TTRPGs, and keep logs of my writing on my personal website on their own little rabbit warren's worth of pages (that give a sense of my writing style). At the moment, I mostly just write with some friends 1v1 over on Discord, since that's easiest. I have pretty extensive experience in playing the Game Master/Dungeon Master role for groups, (primarily 3-6 players) though I prefer GM/DM-less systems. If other adults are interested, this would be cool to talk about sometime. :4u:
I would be interested! I played a couple of sessions of a 5e campaign over Discord a while back and found it really complicated, but I've played 5e in person and had similar issues so I think it's safe to assume it was the system rather than the format. I can't do any kind of time commitment right now, though, just due to personal responsibilities and a weird schedule. So if you're interested in running something in the future, let me know, I just don't know when it will fit into my schedule.

I also have a tiny bit of experience running games, although not in this format.

I started out not liking ttrpgs at all... My first introduction was some friends playing Pathfinder who took it very, very seriously. And I've come to understand that Pathfinder is a very complicated system to get into, much less start with. I felt very out of place the short time I played.

I've been reintroduced over the last few years and have found a new love for it. I used to DM for friends as a kind of "drew the short straw" of everybody wanting to try DnD but nobody wanting to DM. I started with the original DnD ruleset with my own world and homebrew enemies, weapons and gear baked in. It was super fun and we were all flying by the seat of our pants.

These days I host drop-in sessions every week with other, rotating DMs at the gaming shop I run. We mostly do DnD 5e. I started out doing one-shots from a book called One Shot Wonders, but lately I've been writing my own scenarios and it's been thrilling seeing people take to them.

The drop-in sessions have been super cool and we attract a lot of new players who go from never having tried Dnd in their life, to showing up at the next session with all the books and dice and accoutrements.

Other than 5e, I tried Shadowdark for the first time the other week which is super fun. I love the old school dungeon crawl, treasure hunt aspect.

I'm also well versed in Call of Cthulhu and a small system called AZAG, which I recommend everyone check out.

In my country - Poland - for long time Warhammer Fantasy RPG was the most popular game, much more than DnD. Nowadays it is more balanced. Other games popular in Poland are e.g. Call of Cthulhu and World of Darkness. Some games which were produced by Poles: Neuroshima, Monastyr, Dzikie Pola, Corny Groń.
