How do y'all feel about book chests? I'm talking about hardcover books cut up to have a storage space inside them, like this:

Personally I think aesthetically they look very cool and useful but thinking about cutting up an entire book gives me the ick, though I do want to make one someday (perhaps out of a dictionary because I don't really care much for those). Maybe it's just a silly bias but I was wondering what other people think about this?

If anyone has any book boxes of their own you can post it or discuss it here.

They are kitschy in a way that doesn't exactly kick my taste - but about your doubts about cutting a book, I believe you can chill out - there are countless of books that are thrown into the waste every day, many of them unread. I know places where you can cheaply buy old books that nearly nobody wants anymore by the kilogram for a small buck, and that usually look better than a dictionary or telephone book.  I would however advice against the using of really old (like 100years+ and in good shape) as they might have historic value, rare books that someone might want to read, or holy/highly ideological books (though this isn't necessarily bad in any case, it clearly is a rather abrasive statement).

I think I'd rather put my stuff in an actual chest and my books like, remain books. wait why does that make me sound like a puritan or something. LOL

Well, there's plenty of pretty useless books (e.g: old textbooks/dictionaries as you mentioned) that would be perfect for this, both because they'd just end up in the trash otherwise and because thicc old book = aesthetic. You might even ask your local library if they're throwing away any. Or were you more concerned about the time it'd take you to do it?
