I've only recently gotten into jrpgs, as my first was Persona 2 IS back in 2020, but I've been playing a lot since. I have a 3DS and PS vita so I mostly play the games available on those. My favourite jrpg of all has to be Tales of the Abyss, such a beautiful and amazing game. Played most of it on public commute and I'm so glad I decided to do the final dungeon at home because the ending made me cry so much. Right now I'm playing Tales of Destiny DC and I'm currently at the infamously horrendous final dungeon Well, the game has been great otherwise. I love the real time battle system, it's very fun. My favorite feature of this series is the optional skits. You find out more about the world and the characters or just get to watch a funny/charming scene. I wish more games aped this mechanic. I also love the Shin Megami Tensei series, particularly Strange Journey and SMTIV. I really love the stories and gameplay loop, I've always loved mythology so I love learning about it through the demons as well. There still hasn't been one demon originating from my country so sometimes I draw art of my ideas. I've played a lot of other SMT games but never finished them because the story hasn't gripped me as much. I plan to return to them at some point though. I'd like to figure out a way to mod the Etrian Odyssey games on 3DS to replace the portraits with SMT characters. I think it'd be cute to draw them in the EO style. Atlus has already made a few as DLC for the steam releases and they're very cute, but there's no Strange Journey representation despite SJ being a crossover between the SMT team and the EO team The Disgaea games are also incredibly fun. The first one I played was Disgaea 2 and later Disgaea 4's mobile port (didn't have a Vita yet and the vita Disgaea games are still broken on emulator iirc) and the game required online connection to play. Which is absolutely ridiculous for a PAID game on a portable device. It's a bit heavy on weird fanservice which I really dislike but they're amazing games otherwise. I love the gameplay and the silliness of the world. The characters aren't deep but they're charming and likeable. Does Shiren the Wanderer count? It's the most addictive roguelike I've played. I never got into the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games because of the (to me) uninteresting story getting in way of fun gameplay so Shiren is perfect. It's my new public commute game and it's so addictive that I've nerly missed my station multiple times.. XD

aaaaaaaa I love Tales Of, and Abyss is definitely my favorite! The skits are such a great feature, I feel like it's so easy to get attached to Tales characters because of how many little details you learn about them through skits. And I'm always a fan of really over-the-top attacks in RPGs, so the battle system is so much fun (especially on co-op)
Yess! Exactly, they're a big part of what made me love the games so much. Rarely ever in any media that isn't slice of life do I see characters just hang out and interact with eachother in a way that isn't there to serve the plot. That has always been a big gripe for me. Skits do so much for character development, make the characters feel so much more real, and flesh out relationships between characters who don't usually interact in the story scenes. The voice acting adds a lot and makes me wish the side quests were voiced too. I've never played any of the games in co-op but it sounds like a very fun feature. I don't understand why they removed it in Arise?! Apparently Arise has ruined skits as well. What happened...

i've been playing through Digital Devil Saga 1 on the PS2. AS IN I'VE BEEN STUCK AT THE FINAL BOSS!! IT'S TOO HARD I NEED THAT SKILL THAT NULLS MAGIC IT'S A LOT TO GRIND FOR its like a demon with several phases and a phase that has 7 elemental rocks of every type of the game so you cant just directly hit the boss and the with a Ma skill because some rocks null certain magic types. it sucks but i'll get thru it some day each rock gets a turn btw it's like 8 turns total iirc
