Interestingly, I have two measurements of my website size because of static site generators.
The github repository is about 926mb and neocities reports 358mb.. I think the inflated size of my site is just due to jekyll caching the generated version locally and git, so I'm going to go with the neocities report.

358mb is pretty good for a kinda complex site, I think? I don't really have a good comparison on it. I do pay for supporter though, so size shouldn't be too much of an issue.

quite a bit. most of my space is taken up by a full-res photograph for my first blog post and the Lainchan webring (which is decentralized; you host all the images and links urself).
i generally try to keep pages under 300kb by using low resolution and bit-depth pngs or webps at a low quality setting (and i might start using avif) or jpegs encoded using jpegli, jpeg-xl's efficient jpeg encoder.

at the end of the day, it's not the size of your site that matters, it's how well you're using that space that does. still, it's best to try to keep your pages lean. it helps with accessibility, website management and archival.

note: the outlined area in windirstat is just for the lainchan webring lol

Oof, my site's a chonky boy. I think it's around 1GB in total but only because most of the space is taken by high-res art and comicbooks PDFs, all of it being technically optional to download so it shouldn't be much of a problem for visitors. Despite the many walls of text I type as update/journal/character bio, my database is still incredibly lightweight compared to the folders in my file manager.

This topic has me thinking, what are some ways I could make my site smaller?

don't use images that are unnecessarily large, use svgs for media that needs to look crisp at all sizes, try using avif for images, av1 for videos and opus at 64-128kbps for audio (unless you care about mac users in which you should just use mp3 at a vbr preset between 1 and 6) create effects in css/javascript instead of prerendering them as images. oh yea also for the love of god please do not use javascript frameworks for personal websites.
