Ironically, this became the fastest-moving thread on the forum. 15 replies in 2 and a half hours???

 

I see a lot of talk here about letters & e-mails, but another form of analog communication is writing in mutually accessible places. Back when I was in high school, the teacher in one of my classes didn't use one part of the whiteboard, so a few of us would write & doodle things there. One time, someone from one of the other classes left a reply to something written there, and it became an unspoken tradition to communicate between classes this way. It didn't have to be in writing & words, too; one of us could draw a bunny, then another class could draw a second bunny, then another might draw a third bunny, and you could tell by the drawing styles that they were from different people.

I call it bathroom-stall communication. It might also happen with graffiti, the collaborate posters at public memorial & political activism events, or really any place with a public bulletin board (and maybe sticky notes) like at club rooms & concert venues. It was also the conceit of this website back when it was running with a backend, that people would be able to input a short message or image that would then show up stylized & filtered somewhere on the collage, like a cyberpunk form of the bathroom stall

This is such a cool concept! I guess guestbooks on people's sites can also be kinda like that? Or anonymous message boards. That's such a cool thing though, I love how many different types of communication there is! I almost want there to be like, 20 different methods in my day to day life, just so I can disperse my energy and socializing in different ways. So I'm following this thread and writing down every and any idea LOL

I've actually gotten like two pen pals semi recently through email. One of them just randomly emailed me one day and it's been really fun talking like this. It gives me something to look forward to every couple of days and actually has me checking my email more.
I feel like I can talk more about a topic than a couple of messages being exchanged then the convo dying off or moving on quickly into the next topic. Wish I had a couple more people to write too. Snail mail also seems fun ^^!

I keep seeing protonmail... Do you mind explaining what it is exactly? I know I can just google it but I'd like to hear your thoughts

I keep hearing a lot of people say that they're interested in becoming penpals/email penpals... I'm wondering though, if I should make a thread to help people meet other penpals/email penpals or if this is something that should just happen organically? What do you think? Would love to hear your thoughts

Oh this would be awesome!! I remember mine telling me that he tried actual penpal sites but got either nothing or weirdos so it'll be nice to have a place to hopefully avoid that! Maybe have people make a ad listing their interest and stuff? Penpals would probably still happen organically either way. I feel as if it would lend an option for people not sure how to get into it.

I was literally thinking this exact thought: What kind of people would this attract...? Every once in a while, I'll peruse "Let's be friends" threads and... I don't wanna be offensive but yeesh. But also, let me not talk down to anyone trying to put themselves out there, of course. It just ends up attracting people that are trying to prey on people that are lonely or isolated, etc. I think with this forum, Melonland, there's enough barriers of entry to hopefully weed out some weirdos ? ...Maybe. LOL

Yeah, most people on here seem relatively adjusted ig would be the word? Like I haven't seen any terrible or horrible people on here at all, the complete opposite actually. So I wouldn't be toooo worried about it, but it's good to have caution when it comes to it! I'm not sure if the forum has a age minimum but it'll also be good to have the posters specify the age range. I don't think it's inheritable bad for a minor to interact with a adult but it'll be a good thing to have regardless. EX: 18+ only
