I recently published a post on some of my favorite blogs I started following via rss last year: https://finalfantasyix.neocities.org/journal/misc/blogroll2025, and I'm wondering if anyone else has any recommendations or favorites to share? Obviously I really like games-focused stuff, but I also want to branch out in terms of topics I read about. It's just hard to figure out where to start with that.

Sidenote, I'm really glad I got into reading blogs. I feel like text-based content got a lot less popular and harder to find after the rising popularity of youtube videos (and more recently shortform video content) but I have never been able be one of those people who can just sit down and watch a bunch of videos. Reading is so much easier for me ;;-;;

Here are some of my favorite writers that I'm following right now:

-Mike V at No Happy Nonsense
-Ran Prieur
-Meadow at his cafe

I also highly recommend checking out Meta Filter and subscribing to any and all of their feeds. Always interesting stuff on there. I've discovered some awesome blogs and publications through it.

I'm curious what about other's recommendations since I used to read all my articles on Substack (then the ID ban happened). So, I'm back a square one.

The only 'blogs' (RSS Feeds) I was following were all Webcomics and Podcasts. I find audio content easier to process so video has always been my default. However, back a couple years ago I found the Read Aloud extension and it helped me incredibly! I really enjoy when creators make both video and written version of their topic so one can pick their preferred medium.

I'm looking forward to seeing the other replies :D

It's kind of ugly (but gloriously oldschool), but I maintain a semi-up-to-date copy of my Blogroll, exported directly from my RSS reader, at: danq.me/blogroll

That's a mostly-complete list of everything I subscribe to, plus an OPML download in case you want a complete copy of it, or of a category within it. It also includes a lot of Melonlanders, a list of whose RSS feeds I extracted via this method.

(If that looks like an intimidatingly-long list, don't worry: I don't target "RSS Zero"!

Obviously I'd be remiss if I didn't take this opportunity to plug my own primary RSS feed, to which I've managed to post something every day so far this year, including at least one post that's only publicised by RSS alongside various other bits and pieces: e.g. about playing with roomscale VR, getting nostalgic about old music and technology, working out, building a weird-looking gaming PC, and hanging out in a freezing fog!

She doesn't have her RSS set up yet, but my friend Anne Hero's blog is great! She doesn't have a solid theme with what she posts, it ranges from life updates to talking about books she's read to solid advice (highly recommend psychic armor for the modern girl and her online shopping guide!)

I'm not sure if these would be to your taste, but these are blogs I currently wind up reading regularly:

  • Pivot to AI by David Gerard. (News blog covering Artificial Idiots and their perpetrators in exclusively criticizing and satiring way)
  • Where's Your Ed At by Edward Zitron. (Technologies are enshittified and those Artificial Idiot overlords are lying to us, here are evidences and numbers I could prove it to you; partially-paywalled)
  • Just Use Email by a rando named Lawrence. (Hail email and its superpowers! Life hacks on how to use email for everything)
  • Low Tech Magazine by Kris de Decker. (Low-tech and no-tech solutions to life's needs; actually runs on solar and sometimes goes offline. Its feed is also broken for some reason)

I also have my own unusual Links page on my personal website; I won't call it "blogroll" because majority of things I link are single pages/articles rather than blog homes. It's unusual in 2 counts: one is I annotate everything I linked with my own description; two being my Links page itself is followable via Atom feed, as if it was a links aggregator. (1)

(1) See the intro and footnote on that page for details. If you opened the feed in your feed reader, you would see that each thing I linked appear there as each heading (if your reader is configured to show summary blurb, you'd see my annotation there too); while clicking on that heading would lead you directly to the target site. Author information of each entry in the feed is not accurate though, not sure how to fix that yet.
