My website uses about ~100MB. And thats for a blog (flatpress), linkportal (shaarli), and my forum (phpBB). Including the content, style, images.
And my webspace has 20GB of storage.

On the new site, its now reading as 17.82 MiB, and 99% of that is images I believe (similar to the prev person, I also run a webcomic).

My local copy is 4.6 MB. Pictures are only 432 KB (i guess it wouldn't hurt to make sure they're compressed. Maybe tomorrow). A lot of the site's size is the 3 copies of Moby Dick that add up to 3.9 MB (to demonstrate a compression technique i came up with). According to Neocities, the live version of my site is 4.54 MB. It's mostly plain HTML and i try to keep it light.

Mine is 211 MB, 97% of that is roughly two years of both compressed and uncompressed artwork. Could be smaller, but the site and page content itself is pretty lean so performance impact could be worse. :wizard:

I optimise my artwork when I export it as part of my workflow now. :)

I just checked, and... mine looks like about 27GB. 🤯

But that's got approaching three decades of blogging, podcasts, galleries, vlogging (those videos take up plenty of space!), etc. I try to keep the pages themselves pretty lean: e.g. if you go to the homepage, the initial 17KB load will give you all the HTML, CSS, and JS you could possibly need; then you'll get about the same again in fonts, and then finally about 300KB of images. So each individual page is pretty lightweight.

But yeah, that cruft adds up over time. Also, I've definitely got images rescaled to sizes I don't use any longer that I ought to tidy up.

Holy crap. I would be confused as to how you can have that much stuff on a webpage but 26 years worth of stuff justifies it.

Have you tried using different formats like webp, avif, or jpeg. Maybe even gif images. That'll dramatically reduce file size.

Have you tried using different formats like webp, avif, or jpeg. Maybe even gif images. That'll dramatically reduce file size.

I'm not so concerned about the storage space; storage is cheap. I care about the bandwidth use though: gotta keep the pages lean! So I upload whatever I like and have tools that resize and reformat on the server. So I might e.g. upload a huge JPEG but I end up with some sensible-sized JPEG, WebP etc. files. I'm not doing AVIF yet but I will in future. But I have the server keep the full-size files too: that's almost certainly a big part of the space usage!

I do content-negotiation, though. E.g. if I upload a PNG and your web browser has an `Accepts:` header with `image/webp` in it then you'll get served the (smaller) WebP version of it; if your browser doesn't support WebP you'll get the PNG version. That optimises for size while still supporting the widest diversity of browsers.

But almost certainly the biggest content is videos. There's 11 videos over 100Mb, a further 136 over 10Mb... those largest-147 videos alone contribute about 11GB to my entire site size!

Anyway, the tl;dr is I don't mind the total storage space - space is cheap, and I want to keep the master files somewhere! - so long as I can keep the bandwidth usage efficient!
