Hi y'all,

I am working on making an Alarm clock / Timer for my website and want to have the option to select different sounds as the alarm.

Where do you go to get free / open-source audio files?

I am hosting on site on Neocities, and because I am not a supporter, I do not think I can play audio files hosted on on Neocities itself. So I was hoping to find a site where I can access the .mp3/.wav files via URL.

I know I can upload files to catbox.moe and play them that way, but I was hoping to be able to pull sounds from a location where I can search for them - such as Pixabay Sound Effects. However, I do not know how to find the actual mp3 file URL on that site.

Any recommendations (databases or single sounds) would be highly appreciated!! Hopefully others will also find sounds people share here useful!

I always start my search on Wikimedia Commons! It's a great resource to find freely licensed media. Here's a search for "alarm clock", for example, filtering for audio files.

For any given sound file, you should be able to hotlink it directly; you can get a direct link to the file after clicking on "Use this file". The only thing I would be concerned about is that files sometimes get deleted because they were uploaded under the wrong license, but anything with a license that seems right should be safe to use :)

Thanks for this source, I will add it to my bookmarks!! I did end up finding the URLs for the files on both Freesound and Pixabay by right-clicking the sound then going to View Page Source and performing a Ctrl+F to find the '.mp3' URL.

Hope that can also aid some people trying to add sounds onto their page. And if you want to check out the Alarm Clock (so far) on my site, then here you go.

If you were making something with a functional resemblance of an alarm clock, there are two "songs" that I would also recommend to add as ringing choices:

Both tunes are real military signals in many countries, used for waking soldiers up (in case of Reveille) and call for morning assembly (in case of First Call).

Apart from what other people suggested, you might want to look at Kevin MacLeod's mountainous pile of his freely-licensed stock music, check out the Stings genre of short music snippets to call for people's attention specifically; you might find some new favorites there. (I have few personal favorites in that section)

P.S. And how could you forget the well-known Nokia cut of "Gran Vals"?

P.P.S. If you used songs/arrangements which require attribution (Kevin MacLeod's ones do), make sure that the credit appears and visible on the page when user selected that song too.
