What font/s do you use to express yourself in the Melonland Forum, and why? Are they similar to the fonts you use on your own website? Why/why not? What do these fonts mean to you?

On here, I favour monospace typefaces--possibly because I spend so much time staring at them in code editors, but also for other reasons. For me, monospace fonts have a certain cold, mechanical gravitas to them, which I admit I really like--especially in contrast to the nature of my forum posts, which I hope come across as warm and informal despite their considered phrasing :)

Monospace type evokes a lot of things for me: a typewriter-printed dossier in a buff manilla folder, or the very code upon which a website is written. There's a sense of detachment and objectivity--either useful information, or vital instructions. While I certainly don't mean to present myself as chilly & self-important, there's just something appealing and also a little meta about presenting my thoughts on a website as if they were code.

Every monospace font is the result of compromise and constraint--a balance between legibility and the requisite limitation of having every character an equal width. Many fonts are impressively, beautifully engineered, but no font category so obviously puts function above form as monospace fonts do. Utilitarianism is something I admire in design, and while there's no real utility in writing a forum post in monospace font, it still brings to mind an essence of raw functionality. It's a similar reason as to why my website has a lot of pointy corners.

Whenever I'm looking at a monospace font in my own life, I'm looking at something I'm actively editing--be it code, or even just random notes (my notepad is set to Consolas because I find it quite legible, and I play with both code and writing in there). I feel thoughtful and industrious! I'm also the kind of person who's a chronic outsider to humanity & has gotten pretty comfortable with it, so I do like how this font makes me sound like a robot :)

As for the specific choice (which I hope does display on your device despite being off-menu, or else this whole post is going to look a little silly by now) I just find the fewer serifs and slightly thicker strokes of Lucida Consola and Consolas are a bit more legible than Courier New :3

It must be said that, in the context of my own website, I primarily use nice normal sans-serif fonts which are a bit easier to read for body text. I choose display fonts based on what fits the theme of the page--nothing overly ornate, except in the rare cases I'm actually going for illegibility. On these forums, though, a little bit of illegibility seems to be a happily embraced custom of the counterculture going on here, so I'm glad to participate :)

I did not Relies you can change the Font, well I noticed it, but it didn't enter my mind.

I like Handwritten Styles of Text, as it often represents something I am writing or have written. Similar to you, it is represented in my Website.

While Monospaced Fonts server a Purpose, conveying a non-Written aspect to my writing. Like Computer Code or Log entries. Something non-Human.

Also, I like the Open Dyslexia Font as it makes stuff easier to read. But more as an Option than the Default.

Honestly I just use good to read fonts, I'm not that big of a font nerd  idk what I use on the forum. I think it's Arial or something? Oe of the "basic" options.

I use a different one on my site. It's again, a simple clear font and slightly round. I think.. it was comfortaa if I'm not mistaken. Idk if this or if it is a different one now, I used to have comfortaa at least. Have to check later. Either way It's really comfy to me and easy on the eyes. Not too squished, not too wide. Perfect letter spacing is quite important to me and many fonts are just not that great with it. That or I have to adjust it which I barely do. I'd rather the font is comfy as is, for the most part. There are also a couple other factors of how the letters are styled for me to comfortably read and like fonts.

I love more funky uniue fonts too for something like titles or headers. But text? Absolutely not. I can't read it. Those italic calligraphy -like fronts are the worst (italic front in general). If you have a large textwall in combination with an unpractical, hard to read font, please don't except me to read that. I won't 😭

I'm a big fan of Times New Roman and other serif fonts. They tend to keep my attention for the longest because of how readable they are. Among sans serif fonts, I'm quit a fan of Roboto and Gill Sans--although the latter was made by a terrible person.

I don't even know what the default font is on here since I've got a custom stylesheet that makes everything Times New Roman :evil:

i use Chicago here because i grew up using Mac OS 9 and its such a beautiful unique looking font while still being practical and legible - before joining, i had already decided it would be the body text font used in my visual novel project, so finding it was an option here delighted me and i couldn't resist setting it as my default :)
on my main site, i use Atkinson Hyperlegible. not only is it designed for people with dyslexia and vision issues, i also really love how it looks - each letter is designed to be very distinct and unique from one another, which brings me joy as someone who enjoys letters and lettering in general. i love 0's with the diagonal bar across!
when coding i use Courier, and i ended up using it (or Courier Prime) for my writing as well - i agree with @Aarix on the joys of monospace but i would like to also add that for writing prose it has a similar effect for me as those people who say you should write in comic sans to remove the pressure! i think also the way each letter pops into place at a steady pace (because of the uniform character widths) is extra satisfying, so it pushes me to write more.
Good topic, i love fonts!

I have a massive soft spot for bitmap fonts, to the point my default font is set to Atari Small (ive been looking for a different font for some things since its not super readable but i cant find any that work well for ui, suggestions would help!)

My site's default font is set to Pokemon Emerald Pro because it's a pretty solid, readable font and a cool easter egg if someone happened to recognize it. I might set my ui to it too, but it seems too thin of a font to work well..

I have the font here set to papyrus because its funny

i picked the font i use on the forums (pixel basiic) for two reasons
  • i use a pixel font on my site and i enjoy consistency in my online form when it's possible.
  • it's the forum font i can read the fastest!

my website's pixel fonts came from my appreciation of the aesthetic overall. i also like the style it contributes to my pages without being too hard to read.
i've gotten quite attached to my sites fonts too! the heading font i use is also used in two of my zines.

So this inspired me to go back and find some new fonts since admittedly I was getting frustrated with Atari Small. So, my current setup is:

Default: Px IBM VGA8 Regular
Terminal: Px TandyOld TV-2y

I use Verdana, because it's the most readable font to me. If I had choices, though, I'd use Atkinson Hyperlegible, which is the primary font on my personal website. Lexend is nice, too. Readability is very important to me.

For coding, I currently use Intel One Mono; in the past, I've used Hack, IBM Plex Mono, and Fira Mono.

Personally, serif fonts have a more formal feel to me, while sans-serif fonts have a more casual feel. Monospace fonts have a neutral, straightforward feel.
