I just started playing Webfishing last night. It's a recent PC game that goes for about $5 US and allows you to hang out with up to 12 people in a 3d world catching fish. It functions as a pretty neat sort of chat room.

If anyone here has tried it, what do you think?

Lately this is exactly the sort of game I've been wanting to make. Minus the chatroom part, because that's getting into protocols I'm not ready to learn about yet, but little worlds where you can just...exist and chill. I really like the aesthetic of this one as well, it looks really neat!

I've been meaning to get this one! It makes me happy to see someone else on this forum play it. The parallel play and simple task seems like the perfect thing to do with my friends, y'know? Stressful games make it hard to have conversations. Plus the animal crossing inspiration is absolutely a nostalgic point for me.

My only real hangup is really just that you can't be an animal aside from a cat or a wolf. That seems like something that would be in a later update, though, so I'm not worried about it.

I do love the concept of it, but it's also apparently wildly insecure.. a friend decompiled it and apparently unlisted/private servers are hidden by a single check and theres no kind of encryption. I like the game's concept, but I probably wouldn't play it yet.

I'm a HUGE fan of this game! I bought it for myself and my boyfriend for his birthday, and then he bought it for our two best friends. Here's a picture of my boyfriend and I in the game :>

There are a lot of reasons why I think the game is so fantastic, and why I think it's succeeded as much as it has.

  • First of all, the price. I think that if the game was anything more than $5, it probably wouldn't be taking off like it is. It's extremely accessible, not only for somebody to buy, but also for somebody to buy for one's self, and all of their friends so that they can all hang out together.
  • There's enough in the game for you to do that you feel as if you're playing a game, while also being chill enough that the focus is still on socializing. VRchat tries to do this, but, because all of the stuff to do is user-made, and often hard to find, you end up struggling to find a good world. Not to mention the amount of worlds often leaves folks with decision paralysis. This has the activities built right in.
  • Fishing is the main activity, but isn't the only activity. There's also chalk so you can draw in-game, and also a surprisingly in-depth guitar mechanic! I've been learning to play various Undertale songs on it :)
  • I think the fact that it wears its inspirations on its sleeve is a great thing. It's quite clearly inspired by Animal Crossing, so, rather than saying, "It's a fishing game where you play as an animal that you can customize, and there's a chatroom", someone can say, "It's like Animal Crossing, except it focuses on fishing and talking to other people." That catches the attention of Animal Crossing fans and those familiar with it quickly, and, given how huge Animal Crossing is, this is to its benefit. (Plus, people have been wanting an Animal Crossing where you can play as an animal instead of a human for, like, ever.)
  • I think the previously-mentioned ability to play as an animal, the customization of your little animal character, and the LGBT+ pride items have drawn in a particular market: queer furries, and the furry community consists of a lot of artists. Being able to customize your player character, and the simple style of the game, means that it's easy and fun to draw your player character to show them off to others. This, of course, gets more eyes on the game.

Basically, I like this game a lot and I've been playing it a ton!

If anyone here is interested in modding their game, I recommend it. It's the first game I've ever modded, and it's pretty easy to do! All you've gotta do is download Hook, Line and Sinker, then select what mods you wanna use from its user-friendly interface. The creator of the game is 100% fine with modding, so long as you're only using it to improve your own experience, not impede others'!

Here's a quick list of mods I recommend:

  • Animalese lets you toggle the Animal Crossing talking sounds in-game -- great for the previously-mentioned Animal Crossing fans!
  • Better Join/Leave changes the color of the "____ left/joined the game". It makes a much bigger difference than you'd think!
  • WebWardrobe is great if you like to switch between multiple outfits! It lets you save certain looks for your player character, then switch between your saved outfits instantly.
  • A common complaint with the game is that there's not enough feminine clothing options. Cutecosmetics is a cosmetic mod which gives you more cute/feminine clothing options. This includes dresses, headphones, skirts, heart glasses, and more!

Please bear in mind that, if you are connecting with others who do not have the cosmetic mod you are using installed, you will show up to them as a default white cat.

And on the subject of cosmetics...

My only real hangup is really just that you can't be an animal aside from a cat or a wolf. That seems like something that would be in a later update, though, so I'm not worried about it.

Yup, this is actively being planned! The creator of the game held a poll to decide which species were most popular with the fanbase. The poll ended up crashing because of the amount of people logging onto it at once, lol, but I grabbed a screenshot of it while it was still up!

In the meantime, though, there are a TON of user-made mods for species. The most-downloaded one is easily the one for rabbits, which gives you the choice to have either lop or erect ears. (I think the creator, if they're gonna add a species, should add rabbits first, because it's often use as a "third" to the dichotomy of cats and dogs, and it is also a common household pet. But that's just my very biased opinion.) There's also one for hyenas, birds (with multiple beak options), goats (with multiple horn options) and more.

Here's my player character, with my cosmetic mods! (The nonbinary pride shirt isn't a mod, it's just something that was added in to the most recent update, and the other picture with my boyfriend and I is on the older side. I'm using the rabbit mod and cutecosmetics mod here!)
