hey, i'm just wondering if there's anyone else here who uses VRChat! if so, i think it would be super cool to meet up in digital space sometime and check out some weird virtual worlds.

VRChat is pretty cool, I've mostly played it using my HTC Vive but since it's a hassle to set it all up it's been a while since I've done so. I might be down to check it out again if we get a little group together!

I love using VRChat, even as someone who doesn't have a VR headset. I ironically enough use a CRT monitor for it.

It's just so cool to talk to people using personas and avatars instead of having to look at human faces, and hanging out in fantasy and abstract locations. I end up enjoying VRChat meetups more than in-person ones!

Would love to do them again. Seems like the ones that were done through the Yesterweb Discord server are up in the air now.

I use VRChat on the daily, I have a quest 3s with pc link and I, like many other trusted users, I love sitting in a circle with other users and doing nothing in the same 3-4 worlds. (/lh) But seriously, I wouldn't be the person or artist I am today without VRC. There are some issues with the platform itself, but as a growing social platform that hosts Official Sanrio collabs and massive conventions it makes sense that there will be growing pains. I have learned a fair bit of Unity and Blender through my years and met people that i love very deeply through it. If we do wanna set up a Melonland meet up im glad to step up to host.

A melonland vrc group would be so giga niche but sounds potentially very fun. I use a Quest 2 and VRC is what properly got me interested in 3d Modeling because feeling at home in an avatar skin was really important to me. Its also an accessible way for me to socialize because i am broke and theres no third spaces I could go to otherwise.

My mom bought an VR headset at the start of the pandemic because her old college friends thought it would be a fun and trendy way to reconnect and keep in touch. She never used it and it ended up at my house. So I tried VRchat maybe once and I was immediately terrified and couldn't talk to anyone.
First of all, very young people are so intimidating when they have complete anonymity - I guess because they're in their element and feel powerful. Whenever I walked into a room there was usually a slurry of swears and slurs and I'd run far away because yeesh. Secondly, I feel like unless you're planning on meeting up with specific people (like my mother did) then you kind of just feel creepy wandering around in these spaces where the demographic skews so young. It felt wrong. Like walking into a Chuck-E-Cheese as a solo 35 year old. 

I think I would give it another try if I had pre-arranged to meet up with people I already sort of knew...and the group was appropriate for my age. (Millennials, GenX or the oldest of GenZ.)

I have a VR headset, but I unfortunately haven't been able to use it in a while. Mainly, I used it for doing weekly film nights with a group of friends. We'd get together in a movie lounge world, pop on some random movie on Youtube (usually anime OVAs or schlocky low budget horror movies) and have the time of our lives.

I'm not sure why, but the friend who hosted all of them has gotten too busy and hasn't been able to do one in a while. It really is a shame, since they were so fun and I don't really have a reason to play VRchat for anything other than that.

I have more hours in that game than I'd like to admit (on desktop mode).

I've had fun here and there in the right settings and with the right people, but yes, like other people said, by-and-large the public experience is quite miserable.

Even in closed groups and the like, the culture in the game isn't really one that I jive with super well. A little too unkind, a little too inconsiderate, and certainly not a safe platform for younger users.

Instead of clicking on someone's profile and discovering their interests and hobbies, I learn things I wouldn't want to know about close friends.

I also think that there's this assumption in social-focused video games that a place being 18+ = any nsfw behaviour goes with no responsibility to others or need for context

I quite like spaces like this site, but unlike forums and other mediums of socializing on the web, social video games seem to consistently fail in meeting the mark. Even playtesting frutiger space (a game that isn't even out yet) had some questionable behaviour come about somehow. I'm not sure what kind of early community stewardship would be needed to cultivate the space users deserve, but I haven't seen any deliberate efforts that I know of to get ahead of what feels like the inevitable curve.
