I've seen Beetlejuice Beetlejuice a handful of times now and I finally have an opinion. (I am gonna hide any spoilers under a tag).

I really loved it, and it captured a lot of the atmosphere and tone of the original movie well - though I feel like this second movie was far more 'toony' and goofy than the original - yeah the OG had it's moments of goofiness but it felt much darker than the sequel and I felt like BJ was a little TOO goofy in this. It didn't bother me though, it sort of felt like the original movie and the Saturday morning cartoon show merged together to make a hybrid sequel as the tones felt borrowed from the animated show quite a bit.

I thought Keaton reprising his role was nothing short of magical, of course the nostalgic little kid in me was elated, though it was clear that the same level of animated energy from the '80s version wasn't quite present here (BJ felt much more low energy despite being more goofy) but that isn't the fault of the movie or Keaton - he is literally in his 70's there is no way that dude is gonna be bouncing around like he was in the '80s.

There were a few characters I felt weren't necessary and a bit superfluous, or perhaps would have all slotted in better with more plot development (had this been a live action series perhaps) but overall I was pleased with it. I think Burton and the cast did the best they could this much later into making a sequel.

Spoiler
Hearing Danny Elfman's score remastered/remixed for the opening credits nearly brought me to tears and I loved the little nod to the Maitlands in that opening scene.

Was it exactly how I imagined a sequel for Beetlejuice? No, did I love it though? Yes. Do I wish they'd done it maybe 10 years sooner perhaps? Probably?? I dunno, I wish this sequel had come a few years after the first, but then had that happened we may have had a really cheesy Beetlejuice goes to Hawaii situation and I dunno if that would have been any better.

Anyways, as a long time fanboy of the ghost with the most, I gotta say I wasn't disappointed with the sequel, I really loved it though there was a lot about it I wish had been a little different - but nothing was so 'wrong' to me that it broke any of the characters or ruined the franchise for me.

If anyone here hasn't seen it, and loves the original - GO SEE IT!  :ozwomp:  :ozwomp:  :ozwomp:
