I used to be super into blogging but nowadays don't really have a place to post. I used to be obsessed with Livejournal way back when so I've tried Dreamwidth, but I had a hard time finding much of a community there, which was LJ's biggest draw for me. I don't necessarily need to have a community, though! I'm currently looking at bearblog and I've previously looked at multiverse.plus (don't let the name put you off, you basically make posts with a collage-like editor so you can add graphics and make your posts look like individual tiny pages) Anyway, what services do you use/recommend?

I use a self hosted Wordpress, and use Mastodon to promote my blogposts. Works good enough for me, but I'm neither in it for much range, nor money.

I'm also using self-hosted Wordpress, though before that I used another blogging platform called Serendipity. It works great if you just want basic functionality, but I wanted more out of it personally.

I wish I remembered the name, but a while back I found a blog that was literally just a listing of text files. The blogger was mostly making a statement about how plaintext works on the web as easily as anything else, but I thought it was cool.

The probably most well known blogger of Germany, fefe, does this, and there are quite a few who imitate him. I'm not a fan of his political views, though - he tends to be conservative leaning in a rather scandal-rag-style way.

I don't think it was that one exactly, since this was actually just a plaintext directory listing, but I believe I've read that blog post too. I'm a big fan of plain text in general for all the reasons Derek listed there, and somehow I find it easier to write in a program like Notepad rather than Word. I agree, it's a great post!

I was wondering if I had read it until you mentioned his political leanings, lol. I think it's a perfectly fine way of blogging, though, and should work in all browsers too!

I stopped blogging in the classic sense of it I used to do because I feel like I want to post in a different manner, this is why my NeoCities is some sort of Blog/Website crossover where I do a bit of both and so far it's pretty nice. SOmetimes I make extra pages or add some text to specific parts but I enjoy the website format as it is.

Thank you for all the feedback, now I'm curious about checking out everyone's blogs. I've ended up settling on bearblog, it's nice and simple but also lets me add images and decorate

Wayyy back when, I used something called Ujournal (.org). That was back in like 2002 or something.

Later, Ujournal I think was merged with AboutMyLife (.net), cause I remember my username was moved to uj_username.

Later I think AML closed or something and I hopped over to LJ as my friends were there anyway.

I stopped using LJ when it started feeling wrong, knowing where the servers are (?) and all that, uhm, so I exported my LJ to Dreamdwidth!

But I only post "for my eyes" stuff only anyway haha. It's not even important, I just like keeping it private.

LJ was so awesome! I totally missed out on journal sites before that, I just used blogger (before it was owned by Google, I think). I've been posting random notes and such to myself on DW, but it doesn't really feel the same way and I prefer my paper journal for private things. I miss the sense of community!

count me as one of those that used to use livejournal! it was nice to have for teenage me that had a lot going on in my life and wanted to rant about it. =P

i also sorely miss blogging sites for sure. is wordpress really the only one out there? i've heard of dreamwidth, but i'm pretty hesitant on exactly how well it works as a livejournal "replacement", so to speak. i'm unfamiliar with anything else that would work...

i used livejournal a bit but my main blogging site was xanga back in the day! all my tween friends and i were soooo emo on xanga.

i really like dreamwidth! i often see people saying they want to or are going to move to dreamwidth, but it never seems to actually happen... the site is pretty quiet. i wish there was more going on on there... maybe we could make an indieweb/neocities dreamwidth community if so many folks want to use it but the inactivity is a barrier? :ha:

It works really similarly to LJ, just with an overall more polished interface (and I think more userpics?). You can even import LJ-specific styles like Flexible Squares, iirc.

The main difference is more the community side of things, there's definitely fewer people around than there on LJ in its heyday.

This would be super cool!
