Today I received this lump of 1993 delivered to my doorstep by a family member who was otherwise taking it to the dump! It turns on just fine, but the CD drive is skipping and the tape belts have perished, so its actually pretty useless  But it adds a very 90s vibe to my room AND it was the stereo we had when I was small (its gone on a long journey and ended up back with me??) - the speakers still rattle because I used to enjoy putting coins in the subwoofer vents.

Anyway, it made me wonder about hifi stereos - do people still have them? Do you have one?

I love stereos!!! I bought this Kenwood amplifier from the early 80s but unfortunately it stopped working as it didn't survive a house/country move.

Also got some these cute, very reasonably priced Wharfedale speakers on ebay.

Now just need to learn how to solder so that I can repair that amp. Or just buy a new one...

Yeah i have one, its actually pretty nice. It was also from the dump funnily enough, but my papa found it and brought it back to me on december 2 years back. The first ever tapes i recorded on it was this local radio station on new years. it was on these old chrome tapes that had a bit of mold on them but were mostly fine apart from pretty bad dropouts. They're Shape brand cassettes from maine

Heres what my record player looks like:

No, sorry I just found these pics online because my non-functional amp is in a box waiting to be repaired now, so no pictures of my actual room...

I've been rocking a super eclectic stereo made up of various early-mid 80s budget model components which I like to call "mid-fi". I'd love to upgrade someday but it works excellently for my purposes at present (mostly recording mixtapes and playing my very modest record collection). the highlight is definitely my technics m228x tape deck, which I've done a lot of various repairs on. I also run a 3.5mm jack to RCA cable from my laptop to run music videos off of and record mixtapes from my digital files. I also spend a lot of time cleaning cat hair out of the amplifier because someone has decided that it is the perfect location to take a nap... my cable management is also abysmal but nobody's perfect.

I have a Hi-Fi setup too!

I've had one since about high school, my parents had one when I was really young but I know next to nothing about it. My first stereo amp was I believe a 70s Kenwood of some kind? Very close in design to what @sibusen posted above.

That unfortunately died, I think it was a transformer issue? Don't remember. I still have it, it's just still broken. Then I got a Pioneer Stereo also from the 70s not long after, looked VERY similar to the Kenwood.

I also still have that one, and it DOES work, kinda. It has major stereo issues, the left channel is nearly completely dead and even slightly touching Any of the switches or dials causes Massive crackling, but it DOES play things.

Right now I am using a modern day Sony STR-DH190 Stereo Amplifier which works wonders!

The turntable I've used for all my stereos is a ~1977 Technics SL-1910 Direct Drive Turntable. Very nice! No complaints.

My speakers are two passive speakers I got off Amazon long ago, I forget their brand. They work well though! I also hook up my lil portable Sony Walkman CD Player to play my CD's out of it too, using an aux cable.

I would take a photo of my setup atm but my room is far too messy to show. :ohdear:

⚑ Moderators Note ⚑
Posts below here have been merged with an older topic!

What speakers/headphones do you have? What other audio devices do you use (DAC/AMP, audio player, etc.)?

Here's mine:
Speakers: Cheap HP stereo speakers from 2007 with a "boxy" sound and a crackling left speaker.

Earphones: KZ ZSN Pro X from 2021. These were my first "good" earphones, but they had treble issues so I later upgraded to Moondrop Chu II when one of the connectors broke. Lost the Chu IIs during HS graduation, had to use parts of my sister's old pair to fix my KZs.

Audio players: AIMP on Samsung A32 5G and HP Omnibook X 14"

I do have some records I found that were going to be thrown out but I don't own a record player, and I borrow my sister's cheap Victrola player if I want to listen to the records..

Using some big, old boxes I got from my parents along with an ONKYO amplifier - also around 40 years old, I guess. MPD is the only Linux player that seems still be able to handle my whole audio library, I used Clementine/Strawberry before.

When traveling, I use beyerdynamic studio headphones and an chinese brand (Shanling, iirc) mobile audio player (toasted the audio out of my notebook, and got tired of it after burning through the second external soundcard...).

Good ol' stuff!

I have like I dunno, 12 headphones. Kind of ridiculous. They amassed over the years but I only really make use of 3. This thread inspired me to give away those that I don't need. I usually stick to Sennheiser & Beyerdynamic when it comes to headphones. Over-ear studio headphones are the best in my opinion when it comes to listening to music or monitoring.

My stereo systems are from the 80s and 90s. I like amplifiers that are really heavy. The haptic of old devices is just on another level. Turning the knobs and pressing buttons on my old devices just feels satisfying. Got some vintage BOSE speakers that really sound nice, a mono studio monitor and a quadro system of JVC speakers. As well as some more pairs of older stereo speakers (Canton, QUART, Panasonic...)

I just realized that I might have to many audio related devices in my posession :drat: Considering that I really am broke right now, I really should sell some of those and gift away the others.

I really wish I had a proper hi-fi setup... FiiO's R7 looks really interesting to me though, like someone stuck an android phone on an amp! Most of my music is digital files, but I'd like to switch to physical media sometime...

I think you can get some good old quality stuff for around 30 to 100 bucks for a complete hi-fi setup when looking for those at the fleamarket. For good speakers you might have to pay extra but I've seen complete packages including disc player, amplifier, tape-decks, tuner and speakers for under 40 bucks sometimes.

Just plug-in your smartphone, mp3 player, computer or whatever and you are set

I'm going thrifting this weekend, so I'll see what I can get.
