I just promoted it but I ended up moving from Nekoweb for the same reason I left Neocities, there's a big focus on the social aspect and followers. Plus I asked for help on their discord and would end up getting ignored more than once so I don't think they liked me, because the discord was not active enough for it to be just coincidentally. I know I'm weird that's okay, I've been kinda ostracized my whole life and I've done a lot of work on what I could do (therapy and medicines). But my RSD is too severe and even if it is coincidence I have to leave for my sake I think. I started getting too hung up on who was following me and stuff.

I moved it to Dreamhost! It's like 14 bucks a month and I get my own domain plus it has php suppport so I can probably do fancier things. What do you think? Have yall ever moved places cuz you didn't feel welcome or like the vibes?

I haven't moved from Neocities (yet) because I'm not confident enough at the moment on migrating but I'm considering it for the long term, perhaps. On the other hand it's enough for my static website. Only thing I've done is buying a domain name.

Hi.
Psychohygiene is an important thing when dealing with online sites, and it is good that you noticed that you had problems with the follower functions and went away. I wish you all the best for your process of sorting things out - it sounds like you are on a good way with it.

That being said: I think that Dreamhost seems rather expensive. I guess you picked their VPS plan? I host my site (with less space, but I don't need more than 10 GB atm) at hetzner for 2€. For ten, you get 100gb space there.

I picked their shared hosting plan, I'm not that familiar with webhosting to be honest. I live in America so I'm not sure where else to go besides goDaddy and I think bc of their whack ass marketing back in the day I associate them with porn sites. I really don't know what I need really lskdf I'm just kinda trying to feel my way around.

Also thank you! I'm trying to build a healthy relationship with it and just have fun while I learn at a slow pace.

I don't think everyone has to if they're able to separate themselves from the social media aspect of it. I mostly wanted wiggle room and to not feel perceived while I stumble around with coding haha

I've considered moving away from Neocities in the long run because I like feeling like the Web Revival is more than just Neocities, you know? But I may not in the end. At the very least, though, I want to buy a domain name and get Neocities's supporter tier.

I also moved away from neocities and nekoweb. Neko... well, I found their discord distinctly unfriendly and the admin's attitude unpleasant, so I cancelled that account almost as fast as I made it.

If I hadn't had a friend offer me space on their server, I probably would have gone with nearly free speech, since they don't charge for stuff you don't use, and their payment setup makes sure you don't get giant surprise bills if your site gets slammed one day.

Taking care of your mental health is super important! I'm definitely getting away from metrics-heavy social media and sites, because watching the numbers (not) go up is not a source of joy *at all*.

I had a Neocities site where I was putting up short pieces I wrote in a writing class. I tried to enter it into the right area in the directory. But the person who was running the directory insisted on writing that I was a man. I told him that was wrong and asked him nicely to change it, but he wouldn't. Later I paid their monthly charge so I could use my own domain, but they were not very helpful when I needed help. Actually they were no help at all. So in the end I left.

If you decide to buy your own domain; warning: it's addictive! I've had to seriously reign myself in or I'd end up owning all of them! I have hosting at Hostmantis, Stablepoint, SharedGrid, Dewlance, x10Premium, Asura, and 2wdHost. Try looking at https://www.webhostingtalk.com/. There are often offers on cheap hosting and they have a forum for free hosting.

I used to use Neocities and then Nekoweb, but since then I've moved to surge.sh, i feel like both neocities and nekoweb gave me less freedom that I was expecting than surge.sh.

Huh, for me atleast the Nekoweb Server has been pretty nice and friendly to me, but even then, you probably joined the wrong server. Unless that happened in the official server then, oh no.

Yeah, unfortunately it was the official server, and the NekoWeb admin was the one who was pretty awful.

All I asked was whether it was *possible* to use a DNS service other than CloudFlare to connect my domain to their site when I was a paid member. Immediately was told I was being ridiculous for not wanting to change services I already pay for elsewhere and transfer control of them to a different company, all so I could use neko instead of neocities. (Then an argument started about CloudFlare which I stayed the hell *out* of because why would I as a brand new member open my time there with an argument?)

If I wanted to migrate away from nekoweb later, I'd have needed to also migrate my DNS server back to the one I choose to pay for, and that's just silly. Better to not migrate to a service that has such restrictions. (Which, I might add, they don't tell you about until you're a paid subscriber - or at least I didn't see that section of the instructions appear until I was paid up.)

Anyhow, the admin response told me both that nekoweb wasn't a fit for me, and also that I wouldn't recommend it.

Oh damn. Not gonna lie i think it's better for me to distance from Nekoweb because of that.
