i can't say i've had many of the problems others have had with bluesky - specifically, random rude users and people doomposting. i hardly see any of that these days. perhaps it's because of my filtered words, which actually DO hide things on bsky, one thing i hated about twitter. i don't want to see it at all; don't show it to me but give me a button to unhide the post, because i'll definitely click on it. :drat:

that being said, as noahie put it: it's a microblogging site at the end of the day, and that has some fundamental issues, some of which are dependent on how you personally use it and some of which are not. i use it to keep up with friends and browse art that isn't posted anywhere else (to my dismay - sheezy is right there!), but just because i don't see it doesn't mean the horrific discourse doesn't exist. i think what resonates with me about it is the fact that i can actually curate my experience to a better degree, NOT that the site is "better" (however you want to quantify that).

i don't really use the blogging portion of bsky much. i just follow pokemon artists there and that's mostly what's on my feed these days, alongside a bit of other things. significantly less crappier than twitter. bsky has its issues for sure but i've curated my feed to such an extent that, for the most part, what i see on my timeline is stuff that isn't going to drive me crazy.

I don't really have any thoughts on it, I do have an account BUT I don't post anything (same with twitter). I usually get messages from frens that have links to those websites so I need the account(s) to view them. Can anyone else relate lol?  :tnt:

It's going to be a long time before BS is bad enough for people to abandon it on principle.

Like so many things. If it weren't like that, we would be living in a utopia. I'm not a utopian, but it's a nice thought.

I lump all the billionaire-techbro-corporate services together, I know some are worse than others and I know the journalists who left the big papers are on BS or Substack. It makes me particularly sad though, that Erin in the Morning made this choice.

And OMG the sheer weight of the site itself, in terms of just loading a page. Funny how my phone can deal but my computer (with its cores) cannot.

We talk about the SMOL web, and I know we really mean it, but I wish those on our side chose the non-big-fugly-water-cooled-datacentre web, because then it would be a utopia. Or something. But honestly, my only gripe with BS (or nearly any site, with some exceptions) is if it wants all my CPU and RAM and welcomes transphobes. Plus, yknow, freaking algorithms.

Also at some point I think furries fled twitter to BS and I sympathise, it doesn't change how I feel about the site (I'm not on twitter either) but ofc do what you have to.

I may be thinking of something else, it's just if any marginalised group flees to something I'm not against them using it per se, but it doesn't make me glad that a big corporate bloated monopoly-of-now-or-the-future website I mean, it's still everything we need to get away from, but definitely use it if it's that important.

I'm extremely not a fan of bluesky. I don't like the idea of breaking away from twitter......to make another twitter. What made twitter suck for me was the mechanisms of microblogging and social media. That's what made people crazy, what made the world move too fast, what made people wring out every drop of funny from a joke/meme so that it's unfunny in less than a week.

Social media mechanisms like feeds, algos, likes, reshares, makes every post about maximizing attention, creating echo chambers, etc etc.

Microblogging makes people not think about posting or reading, so they post worse, they get angrier, they don't take things slow.

Bluesky fixes none of that. And neither does any "alternative" social media imo. Part of the reason I came to forums is to let myself slow down, to find new ways of engaging outside of social media posts.

This forum also has cool projects to find. Infact I found a few pixel cliques and other cool projects from 1 year old threads here. I really like that over "if something is a week old it's buried forever"
