Prizes: back-up itself and peace of mind.

i have had this idea for some time already, and i saw similar activities before - in a form of small posts with reminders. but i wonder if we can make it a group thing too.  :unite:

back-ups are good when you work with websites and important (in broad sense, including emotional) digital stuff overall.

and about making some "schedule" - i'm not expecting from everyone to have too much of free time for this, of course. so i suggest not a strict rule or time, but something like: "it's a last Saturday of the month, share your plans/to-do list for back-ups!" or a calendar with ominous "Back-Up Day is coming soon..."

besides... i keep forgetting to do it regularly!
and the group activity would help me for sure.

UPD: made some kind of deadline.

I really like this idea! I already dedicate Sundays to making sure all of my software and tools are up to date, so it'd be good practice to do the same with back-ups!

Thing is, I don't have a lot of space for OS backups, but I could invest in a hard drive or something to store said backups?

Gonna go off on a bit of a tangent here, but I lowkey wish magnetic tapes were more accessible to the consumer, because having tapes be your backups sounds more convenient and easing to me than having hard drive around that can fail and need power to access the data, you know?

But yeah, what were your plans for a back-up day?

Alright, here's my current backup solution(s):

- My website is downloaded and backed up whenever I remember and whenever I make large changes, to my MacBook. I try to download database backups every other week at the minimum.
- In addition to that, I try to download files as I work on more major changes, so I have an immediate backup should something go astray.
- Then, my MacBook is backed up wirelessly to my Mac Server with Time Machine, so there is redundancy there with the site backups included on my computer backup.
- When I got my new backup drive along with my new MacBook in 2023, I gave my old backup drive with my Time Machine backups to my sister for safe keeping, in another house (off site backup).
- I also have weekly backups automated through my forums using an extension so they are saved onto the server in case I need to revert to last week's backup for whatever reason easily.
- My host also provides backups daily I think, but I've yet to need those so I don't fully know how they work. :P

I recommend adding a calendar alert to your phone/computer so you are consistently reminded to do a backup too. Set it for a time you know you might be at the computer, so you don't put it off.

And as they say, back up your backups!  :ok:

Ooh I would love a periodic reminder like this. Right now I make backups abruptly when I remember to do so, but there can be big spells of time between the backup moments. Recently I've been doing a lot with video recordings and those things take up so much space I may have to buy even more hardware. That's the one thing I dislike about all this: How many HDDs am I gonna hoard?

I digress. It would be good to have a monthly "just do it" moment. That said, I think it is equally important to go through your backups and delete whatever is old or no longer relevant. Would this need its separate day maybe? :omg:

Well, my backup harddrive exploded, but I was thankfully able to put the important stuff on my computer. Now I'm waiting for a new one to be shipped out.
