I've done a ton of mail swaps in the past, but they were always geared towards art--swapping little art cards, stickers, and similar. Recently, though, I was thinking about old forms of physical media, and realized it would be really fun to swap floppy disks or data CDs via mail. Basically, you would fit whatever you could onto one disk, and then send it out to someone to share. Maybe you could pick a theme for each, like "Flight" or "Nature," and then it would be up to everyone to find something interesting to add.
Would anyone be interested in something like this? I'd be happy to host/coordinate, and we could discuss ideas for what to add in the forum. Most swaps require users to fill out a small questionnaire about what they'd like to receive and if they're able to send internationally or not.
If you've never done a mail swap before, there are two ways of organizing them:
1) Everyone sends their items to the swap coordinator, who matches them up and sends them out to everyone. Usually this requires people to send postage along with their letters.
2) The coordinator assigns partners, and then gives everyone the address of the person they are assigned to, and everyone is responsible for sending out their own packages.
Here are some things I was thinking it would be fun to add and could still fit onto a floppy disk:
- Very small pixel images
- Crunchy black and white jpegs of someplace in your town (very small resolution)
- Text documents of your favorite short story or poems
- Copy of an interesting website you found, either stripped down or limited to small sites only
- Custom webpage you made featuring a niche interest of yours, or a small puzzle
- MIDI music
I'd be interested to see what ideas everyone else has!
