I have finally started making a hopefully exhaustive list of as many social MMOs as I can find sorted by whether they are currently active, dead but have a revival project, or dead entirely. Right now I just have a list of games sorted as best as I can for now, but soon I'd like to start linking to where you can play them if they're playable, or some kind of archival information about them if they're not.

Things I'm considering:
Multiple links for certain things if they need more information or if I've found a good video about them.
Some kind of... Key of symbols, I guess, to mark games with certain qualities (Like how many of these are quite genuinely shovelware. I have a disclaimer saying the list is just for reference and I don't necessarily endorse everything on it but... Some of these are egregious and I'm not sure if I should warn this somehow. Also I've already found a game that is a web3 NFT thing and while I, again, just want it on the list for posterity/archival reasons, I feel like it is probably controversial enough to warrant a warning)

What else do you think this needs? Are there any games I'm missing? Any other feedback?

This is a really cool list! Thank you for making it  :omg: I'd like to add my old flame "Whirled" to the dead list - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whirled (it seems to have some part thats still active but Im unsure how much of the game survives) - also Playstation Home is another dead one I enjoyed: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Home - Coca-Cola also had a virtual world in 2007 called CC-Metro: https://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/07/business/media/07adco.html (its almost entirely lost to history minus this article)

For active sites: You can add PuzzlePirates - https://www.puzzlepirates.com - the site has not been updated in long time but as far as I know it's still fully active and has players! There's also Graal Online which is a iPhone based MMO and also works on the web, the app on iOS9 still works  :ozwomp:  https://classic.graalonline.com

For the list ~ It would be cool if you added info and/or homepage links after each so they are easy to lookup - I'd also suggest alphabetising them (you can use a tool like this).  :wizard:

Thanks a ton! I'll add these soon! I was definitely planning on adding tons of links to this page, I just haven't had the chance to start yet. And yeah I was considering alphabetizing them, I'll have to try that tool. Thanks for sharing it!

in 2007 called CC-Metro
It seems like CC-Metro was actualy a sub-world of a space called "There" it shutdown in 2010, but was relaunched as a paid service and then popped back this summer after a YouTube documentary about it got a lot of views - It seems like they just restored the site exactly as it was in 2010, but it is active and online as of writing: https://www.there.com

EDIT: Just finished watching the documentary - its a really wonderful video and I can totally see why it got so many views  :transport:

Well there's a new one called party parrot world https://www.partyparrotworld.com/ made by some of the same devs as club penguin. It kinda died the moment you needed to provide 18+ ID (thanks coppa)  Box critters  https://rocketsnail.com/boxcritters is in the same boat as party parrots as it is made by the actual creator of club penguin rather than some of the employees. I'm not sure if it's still being worked on since it looks like he's joined party parrot world.
There's:

  • Worlds.com
  • Toontown
  • Toontown Rewritten
  • Toontown Corporate Clash
  • MovieStarPlanet
  • Family Guy Online -- apparently a lot of the backend was found but nobody has the client for it. It could just be sitting on some random guys computer.
  • Plantet 51 Online -- this is like the most interesting one. They really thought that movie would be so successful that a mmo would be profitable and maintainable. This is a movie I don't hear anyone talk about
  • FusionFall

ooooh awesome list!

i noticed spark city world in the unsorted section; i remember playing this one with my friends after school! it definitely fits the scope. it's dead now, and despite searching around a bit, i can't find a definitive answer for when it went offline... the best information i've found about it so far is on the portfolio sites of two people who worked on it! art director + lead designer and another game designer

Key of symbols, I guess, to mark games with certain qualities
i think this would be really helpful for navigating the list! right now some games are marked with asterisks, which you say is for "exceptions for certain games for various reasons", but a more direct symbol to describe the reason (too much gameplay? not enough.. something else?) the game is included would make more sense to me as a visitor.

Oh I'm definitely going to have to look into this, thanks for the lead!

I was actually aware of these but completely forgot what they were called so thanks for reminding me! I'll look into them more and find a place on the list for them.

Thank you for sharing your experience! I'll get it sorted, this is the kind of feedback that helps a ton. And yeah I definitely want to work out the symbols more. I'm gonna do some brainstorming on how I want to do that. I'll set that up soon for sure

Update: I got a lot done, everything in unknown except one game is sorted, most things have links, and I've started a key although some things probably need to be looked at to decide if any of the marks apply. Next thing I want to do is add a link to everything that doesn't have one and then hop on the wayback machine to try and find better sources for certain things.

oh, shoot! the password is "kickflip" :dot: rest assured im not leaking government secrets or anything; this and the other sneak peeks can be viewed over on our discord server (which you can join on the website). honestly it's still surreal that we're in touch with the ceo and have the domain and everything through him haha
