Swappable Gifts Update - Artefact Trading!

The forums gifts system has received a big overhaul! 
(you can see your gifts on your profile, here are mine!)

• The old Gifts system has been renamed Artefacts (by larvapuppys suggestion!)
• Anyone can now create new artefacts! (not just full members)
• Artefactscan be swapped with other members
• Artefactscan be locked so other members cant take them
• Swappable artefactsnow show up under your signature in a magic artefactsbox on most themes

OK but how does this work??
OK SO... there is a new feature called Swap Credits! Giving someone a artefacts costs 1 swap credit, you can also add artefacts to your own profile for free! Every time someone adopts one of your artefacts you will get a swap credit (and it will cost them a swap credit) BUT there is a catch!! Each time a artefact is swapped, its swap cost goes up by 1 - So for example: if an artefact is swapped by 3 people, the next person will need 3 swap credits to adopt it - and so on...



(pre update gifts are all locked by default so people cant take your gifts unless you unlock them! ~ the artefact box will only show up under your signature if you have artefacts people can adopt)


If you'd like to embed your artefacts on your homepage, you can use the embed shelf!

Here is the code you need to use, the url has three options you can edit:

• member - SET YOUR FORUM MEMBER ID HERE
• unlocked - can be 1 or 0, 1 includes unlocked artefacts
• locked - can be 1 or 0, 1 includes locked artefacts

Great idea; this will give me an excuse to make some more small pixel icons too!

I've added 2 swappables to my profile, open for business... I need those sweet swap credits, guys.

Suggestion: maybe we can call them something other than gifts now, like tokens, trinkets, collectibles, or toys? A name change to fit the new system better.

Edit: oh no, does this mean they won't be displayed to the left of our posts anymore?    Can we have this feature back and only be able to display a certain # of gifts, or something?

Maybe we could put locked ones on the left like before and swappable ones below? - I was kinda worried about spamming things up too much though after adding the guild icons which was how this whole thing started

I'm in favour of adding back the locked ones. I thought they were cuter than the guilds, but I understand wanting to have them on there too... but if people think it's too cluttered, I'm not sure. I think right above the avatars is maybe not the best place to put the guilds either way; generally I care more about seeing someone's avatar first than the groups they are in. If the guild crests were more standardized / all static it might help, too? (sound of me waddling away to design a static crest for the pixel art guild)

Maybe there can be a setting where each person can pick between displaying guilds or displaying gifts, but no option to have both?

If you go with toys, the swappable gift shelves could be renamed to "toy shops". 

Etiquette question: is it ethical for me to make a pixel art piece and upload multiple copies of it to my swappable shelf to farm swap credits, or is this frowned upon?

Is it still okay to grab pixels from the Internet or do we prioritize making our own now? 

I'm personally fond of the word "artifacts", but that's just my choice.

I see larvapuppy is already making a little "personalized shop": oh the possibilities... 

I agree with keeping previously received gifts back to where they were in the first place! 

Also I'd like to ask for the possibility to arrange gifts and guild badges, if that were possible, of course!

This one works well; I switched things over to this, although some pages like the wiki will still need updating.


I did some sorting on the side-bar to make things more clear and give guilds a sense of standardisation and separation from artefacts. @larvapuppy I also applied the new profile icons you made (you may need a cache clear), and moved them to the top, see if your happy with them!

Arranging is a good idea and Id like to work that in somehow - I need to learn more about how to do this best! (I also want to allow people to reposition info blocks on their profiles)


For etiquette and culture - I think that might be something you have to decide yourself - each artifact is linked to your name, so if you wanna make sure all your artifacts are custom and high quality then you can, if you wanna make shovelware artifacts thats also an option

I think these are cool! I like being able to directly gift them to people too.
I am no pixel artiste (yet) so I've started adding some free-to-use ones made by SODA.

NFTs but good? I think this is a pretty cool feature and would encourage people to make 32x32 art.

Can I ask that you disable the ability to delete already swapped artifacts just so someone can't swap a popular artifact and delete it or have someone accidentally delete it? Not that I think someone would do that on this forum but just in case...

- also yes I was vaguely tempted to call them NFTs since they are "non-fungible" and larva suggested calling them tokens - but I figured people might get the wrong idea from that

I think this is prob a good idea - maybe after they are swapped the delete button could turn into a dump button that sends them to the city dump where they gradually disappear unless someone collects them for free

Swapping i > e makes it more unique (in the sense most game currency are called something like "snorkbucks" and not just "golden coins") and reminds me these are little art(e) pieces indeed

"Artefact" is the British spelling, "Artifact" is American spelling ~ My issue is that my computer seems to use multiple dictionaries so my browser says it should be "Artefact" and my code editor says "Artifact" and they each say the other is a misspelling

maybe you could implement it still as a quirk, in true Neopets fashion  the main culprit of people spelling "faerie" instead of "fairy"

(also, if you're a Neopet fan, here's a bonus fun fact I learnt not too long ago: "Achyfi" comes from the real life Welsh expression ach y fi (also spelled ych y fi, pronounced ack-uh-vee) meaning "yucky" or "blech"!

One question I have, how do tokens get generated? I know I will get some if someone swaps an artifact from me, but are new tokens added to circulation, or is everyone swapping with the same 3 per user?

This is an issue Im aware of Currently the only credits are the ones people get when they join, so new members are needed for more credits to enter the system. We prob need an alternative method to add new credits because after a few weeks a handful of members will be hoarding credits and the swap system will prob halt - I am open to suggestions for credit intro systems!

They need to have some sort of limiting factor to stop inflation though; maybe every 1000 words posted on the forum gains you a credit? (or something along those lines) - OR maybe you earn credits from people clicking your eLink banners - although now its turning into a real ad economy
