I recently got inspired by this blog post to turn a 10 year old laptop running linux mint into a 'typewriter'. I don't really use it for much else (its pretty slow, so doing much else would be difficult) and its been nice having a dedicated typing device that can't do much else. the slowness is kind of a feature not a bug.

But this process has me thinking about text editors. I'm using obsidian - I'm familiar with it, it works, I like markdown. I'll probably just stick with that. But I wonder what else is out there. Does anyone use an unusual or unique text editor? Perhaps one that is designed to look like a typewriter, or to look like a terminal from a science fiction movie... I'm just curious about what else is out there.

I recently had a very similar idea; my thought was to install a seperate system with only Emacs to allow me to write without the temptations of a unlimited system. My friend, whom I told about the idea wants to turn a old notebook into a digital typewriter as well.

Its not really weird, but Geany is - for the use within a modern system - a outstanding great text editor :). It is designed for coding, but I found it to be also the best txt-editor available for Linux. It has the features needed for a good workflow, but not much more.

NoTimeToPlay, a developer who I found while digging through obscure DIY-games has a passion for text-editors. He developed somehimself, and also did this great catalogue of outliners.

This is probably less useful than the ones you both mentioned, but it certainly is unusual!

Textreme and Textreme 2 are editors that are meant to be fun, and both feature a lot of movement and craziness. I think they're both really good examples of what software can be when you're designing for yourself and having fun breaking the rules!
