Slightly vague title, but I really don't know how to preface this. Just wanted to start a thread for those of us that are listeners, studiers, perhaps even creators of jazz music? In all its glorious variation and flavourings. A place to find, recommend, discuss everything JAZZ!!! And jazz adjacent things.,. and if you've even made some I personally would love to see it!

While I love music of ALL KINDS, a big problem with music discussions online I find is that a lot of conversation ends up circulating the same kinds of music that popular culture has, by sheer luck, chosen as the messengers of culture, and the music online that everyone has already seen, for it seems that the algorithm has fed all of us the same food from the same source. While there's many streams ,they stem from the same lake. This is nobody's fault, it's just how things are, and for reasons more complex than I admit I'm capable of understanding, jazz rarely finds itself in the center of discussion as much as I think it deservers.

Anyways, why all this? Who am I? What do I want? I don't know...

I'm a jazz drummer. While I've long been the nervous kind, I absolutely love performing. I record some stuff too. It's on my website if you're interested. What I love most about jazz is that it is such a tradition of expression. It's sort of the epitome of soul, of spirit. And it's a deep respect for those that came before, those that showed us the way. John Coltrane, Chick Corea, Cannonball Adderley, Elvin Jones, and many, many more. The life they breathed into their work, the suffering they experienced, for us.

So I ask, unto thee: Where are those, that love this art such as much as me??? Show me your music, especially if you made it yourself! What do you listen to?? Who is your favourite jazz musician? Maybe you play yourself?? Tell me everything you know about this wonderful wonderful artform!

PS: My current favourite jazz album, and has been for some time:

Jazz Pipocado - Michael Pipoquinha (Album: Um Novo Tom)

PPS: This is my first subject posted on this website! If something is weird I apologize in advance! I'm just an excited jazz nerd with a computer...

I can't say that I make Jazz, but I love Jazz, and it certainly has some influence on my own music :).
Jazz musicians I enjoy include John Coltrane, John Zorn, Matthew Ship, Bobby Hutcherson, Sun Ra, Moondog (that might be a stretch), Peter Brötzmann, and many, many more.
I'm also very fond of Zheul, that could be described as a mixture of Jazz and Brutal Prog; Magma and Ruins are typical examples; I also visit Fusion concerts quite often; we have a small but vivid scene around here.

Going to listen into the album you posted somewhat soon; is your music available online? (Edit: Found it on your page! :))

I don't know much about jazz outside of listening occasionally, but my partner and I visited a local synagogue for Hanukkah recently (we are antizionist) and they had a Louis Armstrong and Trummy impressionist duo that were extremely talented. They also presented a history of Armstrong's life and work.

Oooooh man, Sun Ra!!! What a lovely choice :) Never heard of Moondog though, or Brötzmann, or Zheul. There's something new for me to research! I think that this "new" age jazz fusion is really interesting. Where during the 80's and 90's it was all focus on clean tone, "slick" play, I really love the grungy and dirty of new wave jazz fusion and electronica, a la Clowncore (and by extention Knower), Dirty Loops, Sungazer etc. Far from classical, and in a way much more fitting to todays society. It's the kind of jazz that can go mainstream, which I think it absolutely deserves. At a time where I was musically burnt out, jazz electronica lit a new kind of fire for me.

Glad you could find what you were looking for! I'm planning on uploading a lot more, but right now I'm in somewhat of a dry streak when it comes to gigs. I would love to record an album at some point, I have the material for it, it's just logistically difficult at the moment. It's one of those things easier said than done.

That's awesome! Louis was such a fantastic performer. I think there's something truly charming about that real old era of jazz. Louis, Charlie Parker, even Django Reinhardt! Oh man, the amount of Django songs I've covered. So much emotion. Nuages is such a wonderful tune! And so sad...

Nuages - Django Reinhardt

Hehe, good old Django Rheinhardt. There is a fairly good documentation about him, featuring interviews with his friends - unfortunately only available in German from what I can tell.

Brötzmann was a great, radical Sax player. Schwarzwaldfahrt is my favorite Album from him, although Machine Gun is more popular.

Moondog denied to do Jazz, insisting that he was doing classical music - he was fixated on mastering the Counterpoint, but especially the rhythmical output he did with the instruments he invented himself is clearly jazzy. I prefer his more "classical"-oriented output, though:

About time and music: If you can get a hold of it, I recommend a dive into Allan Lomax "Land where the blues began". It was one of my best reads in 2025, and it will open up a lot when it comes to black music.

Merry Christmas!
