one of the first ever gaming consoles i used and loved was the playstation 2, and i still have my grandfathers original ps2 slim!! i recently got it set up after searching high and low for all of the cords (just for them to be within a 5ft radius of each other in my basement... :drat: ) and i've been able to play some pretty cool games that i havent touched in years!!

is anyone familiar with Frogger: The Great Quest? ive only been able to find one good letsplay on youtube, so im guessing its not very popular :/ but i have to say that its my favorite game from my childhood, aside from webkinz hehe. the story is kind of silly and so are the graphics, and its actually a little creepy at times. theres a lack of friendly npcs and nps in general in each level and theres towns that have been pretty much abandoned and taken over by goblins. not to mention you have to go into the catacombs and get jumpscared by dracula at one point... i still hate being chased by that big purple monster in the forest :ohdear:

ive also been loving hitman contracts, the WOA games are my absolute favorite and its super cool to see what the games used to be like, and now i really want to play every single game :ha: . its a lot more difficult and unforgiving than the newer games, but thats all part of the fun!!

what's everyone's favorite ps2 game from their childhood? what games do you love now that your older and able to appreciate them a little more?

I still have a fat and a slim! I think the fat has a faulty disk drive, but the slim works well and is still somewhat setup as a DVD player.

I feel like my favorite PS2 games growing up were kinda normie, but that's ok!
  • SSX Tricky - this is still one of my all time favorite games
  • GTA Vice City - it had cheats to make all the cars pink and able to fly!
  • Ratchet and Clank - I feel like this is the archetype of PS2 games, plus it was cool that you got a robot pal  :eyes:
  • Spider Man - there was a cheat to become the green goblin!
  • Harry Potter Chamber of Secrets - it was annoying but also had a mood
  • Monsters, Inc. Scare Island - That game was freaky!

Some ones I've tried more recently that I enjoyed:
  • REZ - I really love everything about this game
  • ICO - Worth playing for someone into game design and history, but I didn't find it super fun
  • Bully - This ones kinda a gem
  • Crazy Taxi - Not just a PS2 game, but its fun to put on when people are over
  • Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 - Its mostly got a great soundtrack while you push random buttons
  • Jak and Daxter - I only got a bit into it, but its very PS2

I tried Rule of Rose a few months ago to see if it was worth all the drama of being banned; I'm not sure it was; its not a very good game and I gave up after a while, but it does have a very haunted mood that stuck with me.

Kingdom Hearts, I tried for the first time a two years ago, and the start was horrible and I threw the disc across the room! (That was fun though) (I'm aware this will make people angry  The disc was not harmed )

I actually have two PS2s! One of them is the family console from when I was a kid, but the power cable is really shoddy on it now. The other one was given to my as a replacement by my sibling, who speedruns some PS games and has multiple PS2s for that purpose (PlayStation 2 is better for speedrunning PS1 games than the original console, I think because of something called "fast disc speed"? If I recall correctly it makes the load times faster). The console I've been given isn't good for speedrunning for some reason, but I can't remember why. It's a slim model, so it's not because it's slow.

I think my favourite PlayStation game of all time would be either the original Crash Bandicoot or Crash Bash (though I think the most formative one for me was Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, mainly for its soundtrack), but speaking only of PlayStation 2 games, I think my favourite would be Dark Cloud.

Other PS2 games I remember really enjoying were the SingStar series (but I don't have the microphones anymore ), Need for Speed Underground and its sequel, and Pac-Man World 2. OH also the Jak & Daxter trilogy. Those games were brilliant.

I've seen some gameplay of Frogger: The Great Quest on youtube before. It was Snapcube playing it. I don't think the playthrough got completed, though, but she tried lol. Looks like something I would've enjoyed playing as a kid, if I'd had it.

I LOVE THE PS2 RAAAAAA  :mark:  :mark:  :mark:  :mark:

My dad and i shared all the consoles as a kid since he was big into coding and computer gaming when he was a bebe so I ended up adopting my OG fat ps2 (which just got a $40 fix and if you're in the market for a vintage ps2, go for a slim bc you will not run into these sorts of hardware failures. only raisin i keep fixing mine is bc of nostalgia ;w;) and got a slim when i was around 22-ish and I love them both and the kids love eating the controller nibs whenever they can. :drat:

Some titles I genuinely have loved forever and always recommend:

Dark cloud and Dark Cloud 2 - Dark fantasy dungeon crawling and town building game!!!! The soundtrack is done by LVL-5, who are the team behind all the professor layton soundtracks so you know it's going to be amazing listening. It's also dripping in old school charm and feel.

Kingdom hearts 1 and 2 babey!!!! - Obv not an unknown recc but just so fun!!! Just oozing with charm and gorgeous music and worlds to explore, I was obsessed for years with these games and still lowkey find myself going back to 1 over and over again.

Jak and Dakster 1 - One of the original collectathons that is so overwhelmingly cute! It suffers a little from quirky side character but the game not only had a functional day/night cycle to keep the maps visually interesting while you were collecting, It encouraged you to explore and do things at your own pace by having things you would need to go back for later with new power ups and it felt varied and interesting. The story is so fun, the mechanics feel so good, the character design is unforgettable, and the fishing mini game will become a vocal stim for you forever. This was one of the first console games I 100%'d as a kid so it's absolutely beginner friendly and honestly even fun to watch from the couch.

Baulders Gate: Dark Alliance - Top down dungeon crawler set in the older Baulder's gate universe! I cannot overstate how much I loved this game as a kid. The dark atmosphere, the gritty fighting, learning what a beholder was for the very first time, it has such a special place in my heart and I go back to it even now. With Baulder's gate 3 shining and shimmering, I will always plead for people to also read some of the prior books and games because the entirety of the lore is GOOD. Dark fantasy is gud..,.,,

Psychonauts - SO FUNNNNN. This game is funny, silly, it feels good to play, and it's chockablock full of fun to be found. And, our delightfully funny main character Raz is voiced by the ever talented Richard Horvitz!

There's more I'm absolutely missing so I'll prob come back 2 this thread when it's not 7 in da AM and remember more games that shaped my core as a person

i completely forgot to mention GTA!!! i actually have san andreas, there were multiple copies at the disctraders i got it at and i somehow managed to get the one with a scratched disc, so sometimes theres issues reading it when loading into a cutscene and i have to start all over...im only on about the 4th mission because of it  :ohdear:

it seems really fun from what i have been able to play tho, the story from what ive seen is pretty interesting and i got jumped unprovoked 5 mins into my first playthrough while i was still figuring out how to use my bike, poor cj cant catch a break in my save, ive made at least 5 cars blow up completely unintentionally lol

ratchet and clank was a a classic in my childhood!!! i never got past the first few levels in the game that i had because i was a child but i remember trying repeatedly lol. i have yet to play it again now that im older and i still have the game somewhere, but im excited to see what it was that had my grandfather and i so stumped all those years ago

i also shared consoles with my grandfather, my wii and all of my playstations were either his or bought for me by him haha, he was my best friend when i was a kid since we both really loved playing video games. hes the reason im such a nerd, he was always the guy we went to if we needed help with technology, and i always went to him if i needed help with a game hehe.

i have the same issue with my kitten...i guess all kids are the same!! :ok:

I think my favourite PlayStation game of all time would be either the original Crash Bandicoot or Crash Bash.

I've seen some gameplay of Frogger: The Great Quest on youtube before.

crash bandicoot!!! i cant believe i didnt mention that one!!! i had twinsanity and wrath of cortex, i loved the graphics and beach/island aesthetics in twinsanity and im so upset that i dont have it anymore, ive had crash games on every console ive had and i cant wait to get my hands on that game again now that i have my playstation set up! i wonder if the graphics are as beautiful as i remember haha

ive only seen gamegrumps and a much much smaller youtuber who i cant remember the name of play in full, i actually dont think gamegrumps finished it but to be fair, it can probably get a little boring if you arent playing for nostalgia reasons
