Hello, MelonLanders~

What are some tools that you use (websites, apps, physical items, etc.) to make your World Wide Web journey a whole lot more fun, or unique, or just more you:mark:  For me, right now, my best tool is Brackets (now Phoenix Code) for website development, I just got back into web creation thanks to learning about the Web Revival movement and it's been the best thing ever due to its live updates on my html/css so I know what exactly it is I'm doing

I intend for this to be a thread where us netizens share these tools so new users can know where to start and what to understand before they embark on their web surfing journey, collaboration is the most important part of the WWW, after all. :unite:

Peace and love,

s9k

Fraidycat is awesome, but I'm using only the browser extension on Mozilla and from time to time it's becoming inaccessible... I have to redownload it and import again all my RSS feeds. How do you use Fraidy and did you have any issues at all with it?

I use my (selfhosted) OpenTrashMail as my "kill the newsletter" tool (among other purposes!). Its just great that I can just "subscribe" to a newsletter by just mashing the keyboard then putting @some.domain.of.mine on the end, then copy that same random email address into my trashmail installation to get the RSS feed of the inbox.

not sure if it fits the theme of this particular thread, but, as a russian, Zapret is an incredible tool for unblocking services and websites. its a dpi bypasser and has a lot of neat stuff like customizable lists and a whole gamefilter. i thank obel for this cuz if im not sure how i'd handle not being able to exist in 99% of the internet beyond like ruhabr or some nonsense like that...

I think these kinds of things qualify:

Stylus: This is my fave and it basically is a browser extension that allows you to create custom themes via CSS for any website you want. I have this for almost every site I use that has a boring theme to it and it makes the experience of being on the internet SO MUCH BETTER

XP Newtab: OK THIS ONE IS THE FUCKING BOMB. Basically, creates a windows/desktop kinda website as your browser landing page and its so cool and customizable. you can do Windows 98/95, XP, or 7 as the theme, and can change the background image and everything. PLus, you can add windows and icons too! Personally. I use it as a way to bookmark pages, like I have icons for websites that act as quick links to theme. And in addition to this, just custom themes for browsers makes the whole thing just so much better

Also needless to say, custom site making. I use this for a shit ton of things. obviously my personal site, but also making pseudo mobile apps of sites I use often (for example, THIS ONE). Its pretty simple. You can include a few simple lines in your header (listed bellow) and then if you make a bookmark icon on your homescreen of the site, it opens as though its its own app. I use this to access sites like this and status.cafe and imood so i can edit my status easily on mobile and dont have to go to the page on safari every time (just a note: not sure if this works on Android as I am on apple, but hopefully it does)

Also I guess I just spend less time on big huge social medias. Like, yk, I have accounts for some of them for the sake of access (twitter for example) but I tend to spend my time on smaller social media sites like Bitview, Vidlii, Spacehey, Blips.club, Any site or forum of the indieweb

Also I tend to just curate my experience a lot. Like yk, im on reddit and Tumblr but those tend to be smaller I think less mainstream social medias and therefore are better in my opinion.

Anyways uh, idk if thats what this forum thread is looking for but I thought id share

My advice:
1. If you want to delete your youtube account & not deal with its algorithm & ads but still wanna use it to watch videos, there's a couple of options:
  • Use an open source app or website to subscribe to youtube: the Freetube program, Grayjay, Tartube, Newpipe, etc. A lot of these store data locally.
  • You can use an RSS feed reader to sub to youtube channels instead of your account & then open up whatever video link in your browser, your video player, or use a youtube/media/video downloader like the program Ultimate Media Downloader.
2. Use an ad blocker.

This is such a good website!! I love rss feeds and always get annoyed at email newsletters since my email is already swamped to the point I never read it, so having this is incredibly useful!

    • You can use an RSS feed reader to sub to youtube channels instead of your account & then open up whatever video link in your browser, your video player, or use a youtube/media/video downloader like the program Ultimate Media Downloader.

I will also point out that if you dont care as much about things like comments, you can use MPV as a pretty good youtube player that can also be hooked into a rss feed (thats how i usually follow youtube channels!)
