I have always had a lot of interest and passion in subjects like free speech, technology, art, html and self expression. Being born in the late 90s I remember a foggy time when we had more freedom and ability to own our internet experiences and technology that granted us access to the web.
Now adays, especially with the increase in government surveillance, mass censorship and non optional AI implementation I am finding myself further and further dissatisfied with how the internet, modern tech and social media is being constrained and fed to us. We have little to no control over these things and we feel torn between little options of huge monopoly companies that fund the destruction of our planet and ethics. I have a long history of trauma and abuse and I find myself becoming overstimulated and triggered by modern social media, especially the way that algorithms work.
I really wished to find alternatives to both big name tech companies as well as social media and internet engagement. A couple years ago now I came across Mastodon/the Fediverse and it became one of my main social medias for a while. I still use it and intend to do more with it in the future, but with recent news of Instagram, Discord, X etc all going to absolute shit, I felt compelled to research more and more about other options.
And so I started to learn more about coding, web design, decentralized social platforms and alternative phone/tech. That’s what originally brought me to places like Spacehey and MelonLand Forum actually! Reading about
web renaissance and the community of people bringing back early web and tech nostalgia is super inspiring! I am really excited about my adventure into this world because not only is it directly helpful to me and my own mental health and life, but it also helps create a community and demand for more self made internet and technologies. We can make a difference the more we stand up against the current culture around social media and the like.
Here I will document my ideas, goals and process of making these changes!
