I really like hypothetical questions and I remember reading this in a YouTube community tab a while ago and I NEED to know what MelonLand thinks about this because I personally think both options are absolutely horrible and I had a really hard time answering (but endedp up deciding the human because I'm deathly afraid of insects and would die of a heart attack if I saw that many cockroaches all in the same place)

(replying to the fact this is coming from YouTube culture and what it means there) I think the root of the question is inherently hostile or anti-human, because its assuming a negative association with the presence of a person in a basement. For all I know that person could be my dad working on a cool project, and even if it were an unknown human, it could be a lost and confused old person, it could be someone sheltering from the cold and intending no harm.

A friend of mine once had a break in where someone got into their house during a storm and stole a raincoat, but did no other damage and they left before anyone in the house was awake, and they even left a note apologizing for taking the coat.

Of course the worlds not all lovely, but I think the culture of zombie media and horror films is deeply flawed and the way it trains people to demonize unknown people is really sad.

Sorry if that's a bit heavy for your silly question thread, but I do think its worth thinking about with these sorts of things  :tnt:

i think i'd rather find a human. now (provided this is one of those "next poster answers then writes a new prompt" games), let me continue the game with a more innocent question:

would you rather: gain the ability to fly, or to turn invisible?

I was surprised at the polling results. People would rather a human in the basement than roaches? I mean an infestation would be pretty rough but I have dealt with them before and, although they're hard to get rid of, they're pretty harmless. Just very annoying and gross.

Considering the fact that the human isn't specified, I am taking the initiative to say that the human is someone I do not know. Now, humans are unpredictable, especially strangers. So, seeing someone in my house, in which I had no knowledge of them being there, would be genuinely terrifying. The person could be armed and have the intent to kill. I am a 154 tall female with no upper body strength. If it were to come down to a fight, there would be small chance I would win. If they were harmless, there would have to be a whole thing about why they're in my house and calling the police and having to deal with squatters rights. ('murica baby) Just a lot of hassle.

On the flip side, I could just call an exterminator.

Yep, also surprised. The bugs are harmless.

Then again, I'm someone who gave a Christmas gift to the spider who had moved in. 5 grains of sugar in a few drops of water, served on a cleaned food container cap. Maybe that's why I don't have a bug problem. I got a spider guarding the entrance.

I agree with Melon! I can actually reason with a person, get to the bottom of what they’re doing there, and try to get them help if they need it.

Roaches definitely aren’t harmless. One of my student houses had a roach problem, and I’ve learnt that their faecal matter is toxic to humans. Not only that, but on a more personal note, they’re just extremely icky! I’m probably more scared of roaches than I am of more traditionally “scary” creatures, although living in Britain, I’ve not come across many of the latter.

Of course, it’s a moot point anyway because I don’t have a basement, hehe :ozwomp:

I feel like this really depends on who you are, your identity, where you live and your experiences in life. For example, for a lot of women (I presume), this would be a horrible situation. I mean, there is a reason why a lot of people choose the bear over a random man in a forest. I mean, even if ur a guy, it's still terrifying. Human beings can be the absolute worst, 100% more scary than cockroaches. I am not taking the risk that a horrible person is in my basement, no matter how small it is, because if that person is somehow part of that small percentage, it's going to be bad.

Also depends on which country you are in, what with calling the police, and whether they would actually be able to help you. And if ur in a place where a lot of crime happens, probably not going to want a person in the basement.

It also depends on your ability to defend yourself if the worst were to come.

But yeah, I feel this situation is lowkey another man-or-bear debate.

Huh. Thanks for teaching me something new.

Taking that into account, I'd still rather have the roaches. Assuming that the human would be a stranger and not a friend who has a bad idea for a surprise. With my living situation, the only way for a stranger to end up there is breaking and entering. And I'm physically disabled, so I'd stand no chance if someone who's able to do that attacked me.
