I've been poking around again and found something I thought was pretty neat.
Ringlink was a Perl program written by Gunnar Hjalmarsson in 2001. Ringlink powered all sorts of webrings including World of Webrings and Webring. The code for Ringlink is still available at https://sourceforge.net/projects/ringlink/
Most of the larger webrings closed down around 2016, but Anvilfire, a site dedicated to metal working of all sorts, and is using the original program to make their own webrings. Even the design of them is reminiscent of how the rings used to look. https://rings.anvilfire.net/index.htm

My webring history, links, and technology page was getting out of hand so I've split it down starting at https://brisray.com/web/webring-history.htm Any links I've already given will still work, there are redirects on the server to take care of those.
I've come across some more interesting things. There was something called Orca Ringlink. This was written in PHP with a MySQL database. I think Brian Huisman got fed up of trying to maintain it because several penetration testers managed to get into the databases. I think that could be cured fairly easily now by testing the user input and hashing the passwords in the database.
Does anyone remember The Rail? It was one of the oldest ring managers along with Bomis in 1996. It was written in C and lasted for a little over 20 years. I need to add the story of that to the pages. It was an interesting concept.
I added TYOMA's Pathologic webring to the list of webrings. Those are interesting. There's even a webring for green sites. I don't mean ecologically sound sites, but sites that contain the color green. If only mine were not blue!

My webring list continues to grow. I was a bit disappointed to have to create a list of new rings that seem to have died already but these things happen and I have the URLs in case they should start up again.
I'm nearly at the point where to help people use the list I need to categorize them like Sadgirl does on hers - https://sadgrl.online/cyberspace/webrings
https://brisray.com/web/webring-list.htm
Someone has set themselves quite a task. They've resurrected TourBus which has got to be 20 years old and meant for wikis and Digital Gardens. Unlike traditional rings this was modelled like the old The Rail except using Trains and Stations they use Buses and Stops. Where some sites belong to two or more Buses when you go to their site, or Stop, you can switch Buses and visit a different set of sites on the route.
Meatball must want this to work because doing things this way is more difficult to administer than other types of ring and it involves a bit more work for the site owner to set up.
