i opened a youtube channel recently since my partner and i are playing with the idea of making a short film to share with my writing club. i have always liked video editing in general as a kid, and have been trying to think of creative ways to make videos about my art or videos as art.

as much as i enjoy video essays, those and animatics or art memes seem to be the most common ways artists make videos online. im not interested in making most of these (i dabble in animation and storyboarding sparingly) but am at a loss for ideas. i could make speedpaints, but somehow they genuinely give me performance anxiety. so, i have a lot of static visual art and photography that i have no idea how to put into video format aside from a slideshow.

i have sort of been thinking of it as a backup gallery in part (and something more of my friends would check than my site) but i also want to dabble in multimedia and sound design. i also think that this would be the most healthy way for me to keep in touch with people on a form of social media as someone wanting to get into my local art scene, since making a video requires i put in effort and can't just hit post on a half-formed thought.

I don't know how long a video like this would be, but you mentioned you have static art – why not make some kind of video case study? In design, a case study explains what the goal of a project was, what criteria had to be met, and takes you through the designer's process in making the final product. You could probably easily adapt that to art (why did you make this piece? what were some themes or visual motifs you had in mind from the getgo? How did you progress from initial sketches to the final product?) I hope this makes sense!  :ok:  :ohdear:

Sorry, a second thought hit me – you mentioned wanting to get into your local art scene, maybe you could try editing together some kind of collaborative/interview videos of artists from your area? That way you get video editing experience and meet people from the scene, and probably get to do more with sound design, too! :transport:

tbh while youtube vids are great (i love watching sketchbook flipthroughs for example and i have my own youtube art channel) i don't think it's the best way of keeping in touch with the local art scene. i don't know where you're from (i'm from croatia) and it seems that instagram might be the best way, actually.

i'm personally an instagram hater and i realized how little touch i have with the local scene after not using it for years. opened it up recently again and i see so much stuff local artists are doing again.

so yeah, i think out of all instagram might be your best bet. it's less chaotic and random than tiktok, at least, though amount of ads is insane. i understand not wanting to be on soc media (after all we are on an indie web forum for a reason) but alas, most of the world uses it.
