I'm curious what news sources the web revival crowd generally reads.

And also if there're any independent news outlets, journalists, or bloggers I should check out. It's especially hard to find something non-corporate, covering non-US news.

I read Ars Technica and 404 Media for technology and The Intercept for politics. If you can count it news, I also watch a satirical channel SAMTIME on Youtube, focused on technology. For investigative journalism I watch Megalag's Youtube channel, he's an awesome guy.

I use The Register (IT news - "El Reg" as they call themselves) and Gamers Nexus for tech, I follow people like the co-founder of Mozilla Jamie Zawinski - his website is jwz.org. Don't poke around his website's internals or anything, it will block you - his website gets attacked all the time by AI scrapers.

I also follow The Guardian and the EFF for policy and the latter for tech policy. I mostly have been browsing the small web and tech websites - been kinda avoiding politics when I can.

I used to get them from Fark, but I stopped trying to stay up to date with the world it's not worth it.

I briefly used Stacker News for anything tech-related. You'll notice probably that I only check user-generated news aggregators to get my news from because it's more convenient and at the very least I'm not touching reddit.

The only one that's not a news aggregator is Flayrah and it is a classic news site focused on furries, the community or things that are furry-adjacent. I still use it unlike the other websites I brought up.

Most mornings I spend 30ish minutes reading over the NYTimes (for global/US news), BBC (for global/UK news), RTE (for Irish news), and the Irish Examiner (for local city news), the Verge for tech and web related news.

If there's a big event going on and I want some wider perspectives I might expand that to sites like France24 and DW (for more EU news) and Aljazeera (for non-western news), or even Fox if its related to US politics and I want to know what more right leaning people are saying.

I visit each website one after the other (usually on my phone before I get up or while having breakfast), I tend to just pick one or two articles that catch my eye from each. That gives me a good dose of the general happenings in the wider world, after that morning review I try not to be involved in any news reading for the rest of the day

I have deliberately chosen to not keep up with general news daily anymore, and I only seek out information on specific topics. These days I prefer to read people's reflections on certain news events rather than the pure news report itself - it feels like I am getting some actual value out of it then. My three main reads at the moment are Tweakers (Dutch tech site), Doorbraak (Dutch leftist platform that aggregates reports and essays), and Africa is a Country (reports on Africa and reflections on global politics from an African perspective). Unfortunately I do use LinkedIn for updates related to my field of work but I fucking hate it.

Now that I'm here, does anyone know good, but niche Spanish-language sites for news + essays (so not the usual El País, RTVe, etc)? That would help with my reading comprehension.

I mostly don't follow the news, but i follow hckr.news, an alternate frontend to hacker news, lwn, and occassionally snippits of stuff going on from the onion (DONT LAUGH, THE "what do YOU think?" ARTICLES ARE ALL REAL HEADLINES AND ITS JUST THE RESPONSES THAT ARE SILLY)

I think I mentioned this one in a previous post, but the Zapitistas (an indigeneous-led anti-capitalist movement in Chiapas, Mexico) has their own website and blog with an RSS feed. It's mainly in Spanish, but they also repost stuff translated into other languages as well.
