i wonder if maybe the DSi browser hasn’t been updated to support the version of TLS required by neocities. if your DSi is able to visit websites that don’t require https, such as http://transistorcafe.net/ or even my own website, then that might be the issue.

That's gonna be the issue, yeah. HTTPS changed standards over time, and many sites enforcing HTTPS are unavailable on older systems.

Maybe have a look at Vistaserv. Although you're limited there to just one HTML file with a limited choice of tags.

If you hosted your own site you could just not enforce HTTPS.

i use github pages for hosting my website. it has an option to not enforce HTTPS, which is why my site doesn't require it. (i believe that's the default actually) if you've ever used git or github before, it's a pretty simple hosting provider to use and doesn't have near as many limitations as neocities has. i'd personally recommend it.

alternatively, if you have a raspberry pi or other computer you can leave on all the time, you could host your site right at your home! (as long as your ISP and router allow you to forward port 80, which is the port that regular HTTP usually runs on.)

There's also http://geocities.club, it's a tiny recreation project of the 90's GeoCities made by some people of tilde.club that still works, doesn't have forced HTTPS and also offers free e-mail but does not seem to have been updated since 2 years according to the last annoucement. Just find a neighborhood, fill all the sign up form and there you go. I plan to use it for make a lite version of my website in the future.
