The last few weeks I've worked on an AO3 template to self-host my fanfiction. This somehow looked better than I expected so I decided to upscale the project and make it a freebie template for others to use. The buttons were such a struggle but somehow I made it-- Tada!

The only thing that didn't work out was copying the font, but other than that everything else is authentic to the look and feel of the AO3 website and the Reversi theme. I'm curious to hear what you guys think and if you have any suggestions for the code. Sharing is appreciated. :ozwomp:

Cool! What form does this take? Like, is or will it be an HTML and CSS file, effectively? And anyone who uses this would just manually make HTML pages per chapter per work and manually link up the buttons?

I noticed you left the Comments button intact. Do you plan to hook that into something when you self host?

This is cool! I didn't even know AO3 had a dark mode, to be honest... I don't know if I'd ever use this as I don't really write fanfic anymore, but it's really cool to see! Although if I did use it, I'd probably prefer the light version as that's what I mostly use and what I feel is more "iconic" or whatever. But I digress--this is really cool and it must've taken a tonne of work! Congrats :)

That's kind of how I envisioned it, yes. In my case, only knowing HTML/CSS, I would indeed make separate pages for each chapter. But I can imagine someone with more skills coming up with a better way to switch between chapters (maybe iframes or the thing Zonelets does), and I highly encourage people to freely edit and remix this template.

As for the comments: I left it there for fun and don't necessarily plan to add a hook to an integrated guestbook. Again, people could definitely do that if they know how. For my own fics, the comments button just links to my email. :ok:

Surprising to hear the dark mode is new to you. I did consider adding the original theme; it could be a good way to practice with theme switching. For now I'm letting this project rest, but I think I will work on a light theme in the future. And thanks for the nice words!
