Lets do a arcade tournament!

Hi.

Years ago, I participated in a tournament where retro games were played for highscore over a limited amount of time. Results were posted in a thread along with a proof screenshot and compiled into a table; at the end of the time amount the user with winner of the tournament was anounced. I enjoyed it and took part most times until the board went eventually down.

Would you partake in such a tournament, and are there any games (preferable free to legally download for from a trustworthy source, so anyone can partake) that you would like to suggest for them?

 

PS: This is no initiative to promote my games, and I swear that I won't pick them :D. You should, however, absolutely play them anyways!

That sounds really fun!!
I know that there are websites that host retro games to be played online (if like emulating is less preferable).
Otherwise just going through itch.io will probably be an easy way to find games to fit the tournament.
Now that I am thinking about it like pico-8 games could be a good mix of retro style but modern and accessible for most to play.

specifically I am a big fan of minesweeper and tetris and while I am probably not the best I 100% would participate.(But I would probably try any game on the board).

Harhar, this goes into the right direction :).
If it comes to emulation I could provide information for the users how to run it (either online or on a local emulator, depending on the case), I'm no expert, but quite experienced when doing emulation.

There are various homebrew games that sould work out well (including gameplay-clones of many classic games, including Pacman, Minesweeper or Tetris), and yeah - I also think that many are available on Itch.
I like the pico-8 color schemes, but most (free) pico-8 games that I tried until now showed either no score or had serious troubles in their scoring algorithm (or gameplay :D) - but maybe we finde one that works out well (or, if someone has a direct suggestion: Just link it here!) ;).

Also thought that Tetris might be a nice pick, but I also thought to start out with games where previous experience might matter less, I have a hunch that we have some elite-Minesweeper and Tetris players in this board :D.

Any free game with a score mechanism is fine for me.

I'll be posting here for sure if the thing starts.

Would you guys prefer commonly known games or exotic ones for the first time? Is there anything else I should have in mind? Is photosensitive epilepsy an issue for one of those people who are initially interested?

i really like more exotic and obscure games but i will enjoy pretty much any type of tournament as long as its as a community

Thanks a lot for the nice words 'bout Acid Flight! I'm really honored that it comes to mind when someone thinks about good arcade games - but taking it for a tournament I host would be a bit cringe - also I'm pretty sure that nobody can beat me there given how much playtesting I did ;).
However, be assured that I'm going to check out TheSuperAmazingBlueBallGame! =)

I would like to propose two games as well:

Tetr.io for the inevitable Tetris round of the tournament, and Rhythm Hell where you have to clap to the beat while not making too many mistakes. It quickly gets hard though!
