I was hanging out in Golden Discs (record store chain) with a friend yesterday and I encountered the DVD section with many copies of the Barbie movie! It made me think of the first DVD I ever observed! It was on my dad's laptop and it was incredible that you could fit a whole movie inside a laptop! The DVD itself was a documenty about the Buena Vista Social Club (It was a 90s band from Cuba) which we watched endlessly, although shortly after we also got a copy of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon which I must have seen 1000 times because he'd put it on for just about every car ride!

I think DVDs had a very uncool phase, but I like the idea of having a movie on a disc now and knowing its there when I need it.

If you grew up in the VHS era, what was your first DVD experience? And if you grew up in the DVD era, whats your first memory of a DVD?

i technically grew up in the DVD era, but we didn't have a lot of money and my older siblings had lots of VHS movies from back when they were kids, so our house was a bit of a time capsule for a while  :dive:

my very first DVD was part of a disc set of Seinfeld that my dad used to have. I used to watch the half of whichever season had Elaine on the cover of the DVD over and over on our family computer in the basement, cuz I had a crush on her  but for a really long time, I still preferred VHS (and to this day have stubbornly held onto all of our VHS movies that would have been thrown out by now)  :cheerR:

thanks for the trip down memory lane  :4u: this is a fun thread!!

Oh man, mine was a long time ago, but I think the first DVD I got was a copy of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which I've watched enough times to have it memorized. It had some fun extras on a separate disc, and one of them was a Lego recreation of the Camelot Song ( I've been picking more of them up lately since the various streaming services are making it so difficult to find the movies we want to watch. It's fun going through the stacks at local thrift stores and seeing what I can find.

I grew up on VHS, and all I'm going to say about my first DVD is that it was porn.

My first DVD is an interesting one. I have fond memories of watching a DVD of "Treasure Island", the 1988 Russian animated film (English dubbed). There are *loads* of "Treasure Island" adaptations. My grandmother gifted me this DVD when I was about five years old and she found it in a thrift shop and thought I'd like it, and I sure did. I grew to love it, and I would watch it obsessively again and again. I loved everything about it, the memorable characters and their funny voices, the songs, and the "all over the place" animation, (think of the cheesy Zelda CD-i cutscenes how the characters move all over the place when they talk. Parts of this movie are a bit like that with frequent changes of perspective and character movements). The animation is very ambitious. Some of the action scenes are a bit silly but that's what makes it great I would say.  :cheesy:

Fast-forward to 2022 and one of the characters from the film, Dr. Livesey, became an Internet meme. Specifically this one scene where he's walking alongside Jim Hawkins and Squire Trelawney. xD Around this time I rediscovered the film and watched it all again and got to relive a part of my childhood. Good times. :")

DVDs are less distinct in my mind compared to VHS. My family used the latter way more, in addition to vinyl and cassette tapes, for media watching and listening, despite all three being rather out of date even in my childhood.

The first DVD movie I ever saw - it's hard to be sure, but Titanic or Animal Crackers as my father had a collection of Marx Brothers films on DVD, and of course Titanic as he's real into boats.

I've only recently started my own dvd collection, so my first dvd is John Carpenter's The Thing. Easily one of my favourite movies, and my dad's favourite too!

The first ever DVD I watched was Beetlejuice. When DVDs started becoming more of a thing, I remember being told I had to start replacing my VHS collection with the disc versions. So the first thing I sought to replace was that movie. I remember finding the whole concept of a DVD bizarre because before then I'd only ever seen discs used for music or games.
