How would I make a "talking box"?

So, I really like to create stuff like this in my website, having little characters to talk to and interact with on my my website. However, I find a problem arises where I need to make a ton of different web pages in order to account for each dialogue choice. This is fine, but it could add up in the long run if I make like say, a long dialogue tree with many choices compared to just a few.

I want to make all characters able to be talked to, but due to the limitation of needing to make a new website each time, I haven't been able to. However, I've seen on websites where characters will talk using text boxes, and replace the text on the screen with said text, without having to change the webpage. I wanna know how to do that, as that'd work best to fix my web page clutter problem. If anyone knows how this is done, please lemme know.

Not an exact example, but the characters on Tetrisks Lair are kinda what im going for (except without the gradual text showing / noises)

You can export it as an HTML file and use it on your site, yes. It's a hypertext based engine.
