"How do you eat an elephant? You take it one bite at a time." Yeah, but what about taking those bites? What if you're not hungry?

As someone who never heard of this phrase before, it gives the same energy as “How to put a giraffe into a fridge”, it just sounds hilarious. I wouldn’t see it as a advice if I heard it in real life, like no way I could finish an entire elephant before it starts to rot!

——

For me, it is “If you can’t change the world, change yourself”. While it has a message for arrogant people to not expect the world to move around them, as a kid who was mistreated a lot, when someone tells me this, it only came off as “Suck it up, the only way we will stop treating you like shit is to be a ‘normal’ human being and blend in”. Its like they are blaming me for being builled :(

"Omg, we're cooked dawg"
"Bro is actually ____"
"What is bro doing"
"Enhanced with AI"
"Learn to take a joke"
"I aint reading all that"
"So you think that people should do this terrible thing? (the thing isnt terrible theyre just misinformed)"
"Thats so cringe"
Ending the sentence with "chat"
Bot comments saying "jesus loves you" or "dead internet theory" or "i found this book that improved my life" for no reason

but after seeing one too many people use it to justify watching propaganda film slop like the new Top Gun or like
Don't diss the new Top Gun movie I actually liked that movie. its not like im gonna be all pro military and getting yvan eht nioj'd into the military.

"I aint reading all that"

This one is really really bad. It discourages meaningful in-depth discussion and is also just extremely unfunny. That and "yap" or whatever people say now. It's so obnoxious that I don't really want to talk with people who genuinely say these kinds of things.

@killerscreen I hate the yap thing too! Cant even go on passionately about something without it being considered "too much". You can only act like a tiktok hood irony person if you wanna get friends these days

Yeah...as someone who loves to talk passionately about stuff when I'm around people that I trust, it's super disheartening to even see it happen to other people let alone myself. Maybe I'm being too cranky and too much of a "rahh this new generation" person, but I feel like phrases like that just contribute to the sort of super-fast super-brief culture I see everywhere. Now it feels like you'll get socially ostracized if you have any deeper thoughts that aren't just "yeah fr  :skull:  :skull: ".

"what is bro saying" in this context is also annoying for the same reasons (though I don't mind it when it's done in good spirits)

Not really a "phrase" per se, but I don't like it when people pepper with " :3 " their speeches. "Owospeak" in general, as well as other kinds of "cutesy" online slang such as "everypony". Sounds incredibly grating and condescending to me, as if I was being baby-talked by a complete stranger. I wouldn't let a person I know talk to me like that, either.

literally everything uttered in tiktok. i think i know how the boomers feel now. we used to type actual words, all i see now are tiny amoeba in a petri dish communicating in barely pronouncable letters.

using medical or exclusive terms for everyday things. "trigger" and "triggered" have been misused for years, and i'm still upset about it. (C)PTSD trigger is not the same as being annoyed, or scared, or upset.
also, people without ADHD saying "my new hyperfixation" instead of "strong interest" or "passion." hyperfixation is not just a cool word. 9_9

as for harmless things that are none of my business: UwUspeak and TikTok slang that i don't understand.

Okay so one saying that I USED to hate is "Can't have your cake and eat it too."

I would get furious about how little sense it makes - why would you want a cake if you can't eat it? What else is the purpose of a cake? But one day it 'clicked' for me and now it's one of my favourite phrases, I love to apply it liberally and often, and therefore have discovered that many people I know are also confused and angered by it. But it's too late for me, it's part of my language now. Is this a blessing or a curse?

"F*ck around and find out" - It's emblematic of this culture of casual cruelty / judgement / petty revenge I see a lot of online that I absolutely despise. Half the time the "finding out" is vastly disproportionate to the original offense too.

"The curtains are just blue" - I feel like you can't create a theory or think about symbolism in a lot of spaces without having this thrown at you. It also encourages anti-intellectualism in my opinion.

"Bro" - I'm not your brother.

"Chat" - We aren't on stream (at least I hope we aren't).

"ahh" - It took me like 3 weeks before I stopped saying "ah" in my head.

'Go to therapy' and 'touch grass' and 'chronically online' or some other variation, even when meant 'earnestly' (because the 'earnestness' is morally grandstanding concern-trolling), where the intention is to suggest somebody is engaging in 'problematic' behaviour because they're mentally ill and don't get out in the 'real world'. It's the modern version of 'go read a book', except somehow even more derisive.

People use it because they know directly saying somebody is insane or some sort of ableist slur and that's the reason why they're terrible people has fallen out of vogue in more 'progressive' spaces. If you're using it to criticise somebody for being mean-spirited or aggressive, just go on ahead and call them that instead of making it all about how they need to visit le psychologue.

Same with using psycho/schizo to insult people or comment on erratic behaviour. 'Schizoposting again', 'found myself on schizogram', 'oops the voices got to me', etc. Besides being insulting, it's just creatively bankrupt.

Ooo, if there's a hole there's a goal, agreed. It's such a gross phrase, reeks of arrogance and complete lack of empathy.
"I'm proud of you" is also a phrase I hate. Why should I care if you're proud or not? It's my life, and if I'm in trouble or need help, saying "I'm proud of you" means nothing. It's empty words.

Whenever im having a mental breakdown or something sometimes ill be asked, and strangely MOSTLY by women if "are you on your period?"
last time i got asked that i was in a mental break from a year full of suffering so bad i had a panic attack and passed out becuase a package i ordered a month ago got sent to the wrong house. I thought someone was going to come in my room and night a kill me and i thought i needed to go to a mental hospital. it was NOT MY PERIOD, and tbh i wish it was.

i dont think ive eve known anyone to become mentally delusional to the point where looking at the date on a computer made them have panic attacks, and i dont think thats caused by period... usually.

@echogecko Damn that sucks. I have a brother who is kind of the same. He has to cover up anything that has the number 13 or even the letter m (13th letter of the alphabet).

I know this may sound blunt but have you gone to a doctor about these panic attacks because what you described are some common symptoms of OCD, especially thinking someone will kill you at night.
