I might as well show off a game I've been working on for the past few months for the Atari Jaguar.

It's called "Operation: Followthrough", and I'm using the Jaguar SDK's built in 3D renderer to make it. It turns out it's a lot more capable than it first appears, and I was able to get some pretty cool looking textured 3D out of it.

I made a prologue for JagJam, and recorded footage of me playing it on a real Jaguar:

I've also been writing a development blog for the game. I've learned a lot about the Jaguar hardware since starting this, and have honestly been having a lot of fun developing for it!

I hope to have this game finished by Q2 2025. I have plans to utilise the full 6MB space of the cart to include voiced cutscenes and other goodies.

Right now, I’m working on porting the demo to PC via OpenGL 1.2 and plan to make it work on Windows 95 and 98 as well as modern OSes!

Anyway, hope you guys like it!

This is awesome! I had to google what an Atari Jaguar even was. That's how you know its good hardware  :chef: I haven't looked into it much myself but I'm fascinated by developing indie games for older hardware (or specific hardware at all I suppose). I love the charming crustiness of the way textures are rendered here, and the funny enemy death sound. Is this just an on-rails shooter or can you move and look separately? I assume there's no lightgun peripheral?

It's on rails, and all you move is the crosshair.

No mass market ones, no. The Jaguar has been getting mouse adapters, so I'll need to look into supporting those!

Yo this is seriously AWESOME, making software for legacy hardware is seriously impressive. Learning Assembly for this project is crazy, and I can relate to cramming that language.

Your development blog was a nice read!

Do you have any idea what the process would be like for a Jaguar CD version?

Love seeing new games on old hardware. Keep up the awesome work, pleasantly surprised Jag still has a community of developers. I like to follow n64/gameboy/neogeo projects like these.

This is crazy impressive, you've got animations and textures and a track system and what seem to be particle effects? This is so much work  :omg:

Thanks for the kind words, guys! :ozwomp:

I don't but part of me is dreading it. I'm gonna try and make it happen, but the lack of even any extra RAM will make things pretty difficult, but we'll see!

Well, I kind of cheated with the particle system. I just animated droplets in Blender and exported the frames to Jaguar. :innocent:
I'm not skilled enough for particle effects or armature animations and I'm not sure the Jaguar would even support the latter! The 68000 is already swamped having to deal with Tom and Jerry as it is! :drat:
Would be neat if it were possible, though, because vertex animation is what's taking up the majority of my available RAM space! :tnt:

I got the PC version to run on Windows 98! :ozwomp:  :ozwomp:  :ozwomp:

Though it just barely runs. It runs at like 15fps at best and goes down to around 5. Still, the fact it runs at all is huge!
