I've just been re-reading some of the discussions on websites and mobile screens. I've got the TV on and that got me to thinking about websites on larger screens.

I know lots of people don't want to design their sites for mobile, but I just wondered if they think about their sites on larger screens.

An 8k monitor has 7680 × 4320 pixels, 4k is 3840 x 2160 pixels. My sites use a lot of text which becomes uncomfortable to read with long line sizes, so I set the body max-width to 1100px.

Here's the latest stats on monitor sizes I can find.

I have not, also because I just assume that this issue is easy to solve by just zooming in. The issue with mobile screens is that the change in orientation (from landscape to portrait) makes a lot of things look off, but with big screens in landscape orientation it's just a matter of things being small. Do correct me if I'm wrong.

I don’t care about big screens, and actually, I’ve been stumbling onto a lot of indie websites that are designed for viewports larger than what I have available. Technically my native resolution is 2560 px wide, but my monitor itself is only 13 inches long, so I go by a text size/zoom level appropriate for my actual monitor size. So I have to do a horizontal scroll to actually see all the content on these sites. I don’t really mind, though, because at that point I just close the website altogether and never visit it again (we& really can’t be bothered).

Its an interesting thought! Although I would add a BIG grain of salt because of screen scaling and the fact that many people don't use browsers in fullscreen. I'm on a 14" Macbook Pro that technically has a 4k-like display, however the OS does some sort of scaling magic on things so they often are 1080p sized, just with very crisp rendering.

I don't use my browser in fullscreen, so a lot of sites that are made on wider screens actually get cut off unless I switch to fullscreen mode, even though my native resolution is 3024x1964!

@brisray I've attached a picture of your site loaded at my normal browser size; it fits nicely! - looking at it, and knowing your site is 1100px; at a guess my max screen area must be closer to a 2x reduction from native (1512px width in fullscreen) - so 1100px is a well chosen max.

Some good points. I don't often use the TV for browsing but I was the other day and I was thinking more of making sites responsive to larger screens using media queres.

On my site, the menus change from 5 columns wide down to 2 for small screens. I was wondering if anyone uses media queries for larger screens, say over 3000px wide, to alter the look of their sites.

It's nothing I had really thought of before, but using the zoom feature whether viewing a site like this one or casting my screens to the TV works well.

I don't have much to say, besides that I don't care for Retina displays when browsing websites. It makes pixel art look too blurry which I really don't like, usually due to scaling. Otherwise, monitors each have pros and cons. There's a time and place for each one!!

But I thought I'd throw my hat into the ring, because I'm a freak who uses large displays AND usually full-screens the sites. I usually browse on a Mac 24-inch, with a LOT of pixels!!! But even still, sites almost always scale properly. It's Safari compatibility that's the issue more often than not.

On my own site, it's pretty basic and I set it up to scale well. Images sometimes goof up, but I've ironed out most kinks. (Now it's wrestling iframes that's become my nightmare ;;)

Screenshot of brisray's site, to compare and contrast with other posts. Spoiler'ed since it's huge lmao

I've mostly been concerned about getting things to look good on smaller mobile screens, but this is a good thing to pay attention to as well. Over in the 32-bit cafe there was someone I was chatting with who added some extra neat images that showed up in the margins on larger screens, and I thought it was a neat touch, almost like a surprise for the viewer to discover.

I should probably put some thought into this on my site, because it's probably hard to read on larger screens with the way it's currently set up.

We have a Discourse! It's kind of like an alternative to Discord, meant to be decentralized and more open:
