lately i've been playing through persona 5 royal

One of my favorite games. <3 If you enjoy Persona 5 you should try Metaphor: ReFantazio next. I prefer the setting of Persona 5 more, but I think the writing and combat systems in Metaphor are a clear step up for Atlus.

I think the Like a Dragon/lost judgement spin offs count as jrpgs.

that makes sense! i can definitely see the similarities more there. i was thinking more along the lines of yakuza 0 at first since that was the one i played most recently which is why i wasn't sure, haha.

yeah i definitely want to someday!!! i'm committed to a persona 4 golden playthrough next since i recently bought it. metaphor: refantazio looks like a great game; i don't think it'll run very well on my playstation 4, though XD. playing through p5r sometimes makes it sound like a jet engine! (this is probably a great reminder to myself to eventually clean out the dust....) i've also been looking into emulating some of the older SMT/persona games to play through in the future. :ozwomp:

do the yakuza and nioh games count as jrpgs?

When it comes to the Yakuza franchise, Yakuza 0 through Yakuza 6 are NOT JRPGs, they are Beat em' ups.
HOWEVER with the release of Yakuza 7 (Yakuza: Like a Dragon), it seems like the new direction the series is heading in is turn-based JRPGs, as both Yakuza 7 and Yakuza 8 (Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth) are both traditional JRPGs. I really like those games, they are a great mixture of the story and open world of Yakuza, with gameplay more like the Persona series.

I think the Like a Dragon/lost judgement spin offs count as jrpgs.

I can't entirely place the Judgement series of games as JRPGs because they play more like beat em' ups than the newer main line games, although it definitely has JRPG elements.

Big JRPG nerd jumping in. Played a lot of Pokemon but also started Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth recently and really liked it. Played a bit of Digimon World: Dawn on the DS so the jump was pretty easy to become adjusted to.

I had tried SMT through Devil Survivor series on the 3DS and have had Persona 3 on my backlog for the longest time. Wasn't much into strategy/tactical RPGs aside from Shining Force on the Sega Genesis.

Keep thinking about trying out the digimon rpgs would cyber sleuth be a good start? As I never got into digimon as much as pokemon when I was a lad. But man pokemon has dropping the ball as of late so been looking for replacements.

Honestly don't blame you. I would say that CS would be a good start considering the older Digimon games are a bit less accessible unless you're willing to jailbreak your 3DS and grabbing the DS ones. I did enjoy Digimon Story: Dawn and Dusk to the point of trying DigiWorld DS. Had an older half sibling that was so I was - partially into the series?

I wouldn't consider myself a big jrpg head but I played a bunch of mid tactics jrpgs on the ds as a teen  :ok: I used to pick what to buy pre-owned copies of based on amazon reviews (remember when amazon had pre-owned stuff and reviews were lengthy responses to the quality of a game and not just hundreds of short, probably botted sentences?). The first one that springs to mind is Luminous Arc, which I think even at the time I wasn't huge on the game design. A lot of my tactics involved timing my level ups to restore health, which didn't really feel like the intended way of playing the game? It was very much more about the Girls I think. I also played Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume which is delightfully edgy - check out the opening cutscene. My favourite by FAR was the ds port of Disgaea though - I put over a hundred hours into that thing, the pixel art was a huge inspiration to me and it's funny as hell.
More recently I played Dragon Quest XI (the switch edition with the crazy long postgame). I never actually finished the postgame but its wild how that's when the real story begins, after it took me 90 hours to get to the credits - but I want to hang out with my friends more! I've not played any other Dragon Quests but I'm aware its very much a foundational series - a lot of XI felt like archetypal jrpg but done really well. Big rec from me, I loved the cast and voice acting (especially Rab - it makes me so happy hearing a Scottish character that actually speaks proper scots and is voiced by a glaswegian actor). I've been watching my partner play it recently and its rekindled my love for it.

Been meaning on hacking my 3ds for a while now. As there are bunch of games I want to try on real hardware, mainly do to me wanting to see what they look like in 3d for a bit. Sadly emulating the 3d effect on my monitor just dose not work.
