I Could not find a topic topic about jrpgs in general so I figured I might as well make one.  This is a theard for all roleplaying games retro and modren that are made in japan or have a jrpg style. Whats every ones thoughts on jrpgs? Favorite games? Playing any jrpgs recently? Is Dark souls a jrpg? All this and more in this thread.

Right now I'm playing  Metaphor Refanatazio and rather enjoying it.

I'm not one for typical RPGs, all the number crunching and grinding gets to me. I do enjoy the MOTHER series though, and *somewhat* pokemon.

Sadly EarthBound never clicked with me.

I have a love hate relationship with JRPGs. I love the idea of really cozying up to one, but hardly ever have the attention span to finish one. :/

I think my favorite JRPG is Chrono Cross. The combat system is super exciting and it's the only one I've come close to finishing.

Others I like:
-Persona 5
-SMT V
-Pokemon series
-Bravely Default
-Panzer Dragoon Saga

Do not get me STARTED on JRPGs.
I LOVE JRPGs

It's been my personal goal to play through every single Final Fantasy game, been playing through FFVII:Rebirth in my off time whenever I go home. I'll be bed bound for a bit soon due to surgery, so I'm hoping a game like Final Fantasy or Persona can keep me preoccupied from any pain.
Persona 3 Reload has been amazing for me personally, it fixes many problems I had with Persona 5, and I've been putting much more time into it because of it.

Is Dark souls a jrpg?
Hm, that's an interesting question... Dark Souls has the stats and level-up system of a traditional RPG... And it was developed in Japan...
In all honesty, gameplay-wise I would consider it an ARPG (action RPG) more akin to the more modern Final Fantasy games.

Would love to hear other people's opinions on this topic, what exactly makes an RPG? Turn based combat? Customizable characters? Level ups and stats like attack, speed, and defense? What makes the J in a JRPG?

Super Mario RPG is one of my all time favorites!  It's such a fun time and every time I play it the game just keeps getting better.  :ozwomp:

Super Mario RPG was one of the first JRPG's I played when I was a kid, I've put countless hours, or even days into that game.

When I was a kid I remember watching flash animations like Rawest Forest, or lets plays like Chuggaaconroy's series. And then I eventually got the game for the Wii Virtual console. I just recently plugged that Wii back in and saw my save file right at the end of the game before the final area.
I also have the cartridge for the SNES, and I got really far in it! But, unfortunately, the battery dried up around the time I got to Monstro Town.  It's still a cool collectible, even if the cartridge is really scuffed.

I love Mallow so much, his arc is so silly and fun, and I love frogs. I remember thinking he was some kind of big albino tadpole when I was a kid. (I think the game tells you that? I don't entirely remember.)

TL;DR: Super Mario RPG is peak

Is Dark souls a jrpg?

I think talking about those kinds of semantics is cool because there's a lot of nuance to be had there when talking about the games industry.
Personally I think Dark Souls is not a JRPG because what makes something a JRPG isn't where it was made but how it was made, just like how you could make an Anime in places other than Japan or how you can make JRPGs in places other than Japan because it's the content that counts and not location.
Personally I would call it a WRPG (CRPG?). What makes something a JRPG imo is something that specifically still has has influence or DNA from games like Dragon Quest which were in themselves inspired by CRPGs like Wizardry and Ultima but ultimately took a different direction. Dark Souls has a lot more CRPG DNA than JRPG DNA methinks, if it has any JRPG DNA at all.

I pretty much grew up on Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Phantasy Star, and Shin Megami Tensei.

I'm also a big Souls fan, starting before Souls was even a thing with the old King's Field games that From Software used to make. Not to mention Koudelka and Shadow Hearts.

And I've been playing Final Fantasy XIV for years. Got over 2600 hours as a manic pixie nightmare catgirl that can tank, heal, or DPS.

I am not a fan of JRPGs at all, which is weird since I am an avid Pokémon enjoyer! Soemthing about the Pokémon games makes the JRPG format so palatable in a way I haven't encountered since. Closest thing that came to it was Earthbound and even then I got bored by all the battling at some point. There's something I especially dislike about 4v1 battles, like I'm managing too many things at once and can't invest properly in one character. :ohdear:

Have you tried Shin Megami Tensei? MegaTen was doing monster recruitment and monster vs monster fighting years before Pokemon, but with gods and monsters from mythology and a dark existential cyberpunk vibe. The latest version, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, was a brilliant slow burn IMO.

Wow, really? I never would've guessed (joke)

IMO, JRPG is moreso just a game that heavily leans into number crunching and level ups/going out of your way to grind some. Then again, I haven't played many, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I've only ever played the Pokemon games.

SMRPG is a cool game, but it's too... idk, not gimmicky? For me to have sat down and completed it. I do absolutely adore Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi, tho.

I haven't, and I forgot to mention that I definitely wanna try SMT/Persona because I know they're basically the ones that did the format first.
